On August 11 Polk County held the health contest for county youth under state rules. 15 years as of January 1, 1938. Drs Alliband and W Faaiad of Osceola provided examination service. County champs are Marjorie Gla sser and Martin Kregha. they will compete at the state contest at the state fair.
Polk County Nebraska Board of County Commissioners declares strict adherence to statutes requiring deduction of delinquent personal taxes from claims presented. The board previously showed leniency but will now deduct those taxes from warrants issued to claimants.

The will dispute of the late Charles J. Peterson, valued at about 50 000 to 60 000 dollars, was postponed indefinitely by Judge L S Hastings. Peterson died November 13 1936 in Stromsburg leaving no wife and distant relatives. Beneficiaries include Stromsburg city and school district churches and distant relatives possibly in Sweden. Appeals and partition actions have proceeded from the County court to the District court with E H Feldt of Lincoln and Elmer Nordlund of Stromsburg involved.
George Dorsey departed Thursday for Kansas City to attend to business matters. He is expected to return soon.
The Polk City Band receives an invitation from the Aurora Chamber of Commerce to join the York band for a joint concert in Aurora on Thursday night August 25. Polk City's group has statewide recognition as a rare small town band. Director Robert Strickland has earned compliments for his work this year.
County commissioners announce enforcement of a long standing law requiring deduction of delinquent personal taxes from citizens' warrants. Warrants will not be issued until ten days after the board meets, and claims may be reduced by the tax amount if taxes are unpaid. Also, Polk County W C T U meets in Osceola on August 30 1938 with a full program of devotions reports addresses and musical numbers.
Miss LaVina Swanson and Kenneth Mentink wed at Swede Home Church Saturday evening in Osceola. The ceremony featured Lohengrin's Wedding March and Mendelssohn's March recessional, with a reception at the bride’s home and plans to live on a farm two miles south of Osceola.
Oscar Strand visited Grand Island on Monday to review local commerce and meet business leaders. He toured key sites and discussed investment opportunities with community officials.
Beverly Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Vic Johnson of Osceola was chosen Little Miss Polk County at the Polk County Fair opening Tuesday evening. The Flying Fingers Sewing Club held its Achievement Day program on Thursday evening August 18 at the Maple Grove school house. All members and 24 guests attended. Mrs. Piper and Mrs. Lackey judged the work displayed for county fair consideration and a lunch was served at the end.
Legion Auxiliary members hosted a fried chicken supper for husbands and families at Polk Park on Monday. Cooks and guests reported a good time. Picnic committee included Mesdames C. R. Peterson A. W. Shafer and Henry Sandell. Next meeting set for September 12 at Mrs Arnold Isaacson home with Mrs A W Shafer assisting.
The Picnic Celebration planned for Wednesday August 31 is indefinitely postponed. The Carl Steelquist led Commercial Club committee failed to meet and map a program leaving organizers and local business men disappointed by the skip.
Polk county's annual fair is underway with improved exhibits despite adverse weather. Collective club displays and school showcases draw visitor attention, with officials hopeful for cooler weather to boost attendance. The program promises one of the best fairs, and admission is kept very low. Gibbs & Son return to the midway with rides for all ages.
Augusta Salchow nee Meerkatz born Lemont Illinois June 5 1874 moved to Nebraska with family and lived in Hamilton County. She married Fred Salchow September 22 1892 had five children two died in infancy. Funeral services August 22 at St Peters Lutheran Hampton and Immanuel Lutheran Polk with burial in Immanuel Cemetery Polk. Braver Funeral Home directed.
R. J. Allison who ran the Phillips 66 Station has sold the business and equipment to Floyd Lyle of York who assumed possession on Monday. Allison, also long time village clerk, did not reveal definite future plans but may relocate to Colorado.
Arborville marks its 62nd founding anniversary with a wild west rodeo on Saturday August 27 in the afternoon and evening. A full day of music and entertainment is planned along with ball games and other amusements in Arborville.
About sixty people attended the Frog Pond picnic in Polk Park last Thursday. Former teacher Howard Wilcox spoke during the afternoon. A bounteous noon picnic followed. Letters from absent teachers and pupils were read. Attendees from afar included Mr and Mrs William Cohagan of Central City and John Cohagan with daughter from Colorado.
The Landes estate sale brought 760 acres of Polk County land to auction. Mrs. Johanna Larson bought the entire tract for 49,600 dollars. One 120 acre parcel sold for 40 dollars per acre, while the rest brought 60 to 75 dollars per acre. A. F. Nuquist acted as referee with Mills & Mills.
Mr and Mrs Oliver Johnson marked their tenth wedding anniversary on a Sunday gathering at their home. Guests from Stromsburg Loup City York and nearby areas offered best wishes and left a thoughtful present for the couple.
Miss Gladys Swanson returned home to visit her parents Mr and Mrs A E Swanson from Wayne. Numerous relatives and friends from Loup City Leon Ia Hastings Canton Ohio Benedict Bradshaw York and Hordville gathered or hosted at various homes over the weekend including Mr and Mrs R L Smith and family and Rev Milton Berg now at Hordville.
