The local bouquet salutes J N Norton and Mrs Norton of a Polk County Polk farm for a lifetime in public service. Norton served as county clerk mayor of Osceola and legislator with credits in unicameral reform soil conservation and farm insurance.
A miscellaneous shower for Miss Beverly Jones was held August 20 at the Oscar Jones home. Eighteen attendees enjoyed games and a two course lunch served by hostesses Mrs. Max Jones and Mrs. Robert Baack.
Notice states pork stores will hold their final open night of the season on Wednesday evening August 30.
Janice Crow celebrated her birthday Thursday afternoon August 17 at a party hosted by her mother Mrs. Sid Crow. The event featured the birthday cake ice cream and gifts. Guests included Jeanne Echdahl Donna Cohagen Pam Cramer Barbara Saindon Harlene Johnson Karen Nelson Sally Ann Peterson Voris Scott Mrs Clarence Meerkatz Leon and Kenny and Mrs Alvena Fenster.
Rev. and Mrs. Elwood Anderson and son returned Friday evening from a vacation mainly in Minnesota. En route they stayed four days with relatives in Oakland Nebraska where Rev. Andersons grandfather died and was buried Thursday. They also visited the George Otte and Robert Serena families in Dennison Ohio.
Mr and Mrs Charles Dahlgren spent the weekend in Fremont visiting Mr and Mrs Dean Moomey and family. Mr and Mrs Donald Ostberg entertained at Sunday dinner with Nona Thomas and Dean Ost erg. Mrs Martin Jones left for Horton Kansas to visit relatives. Mr and Mrs O F Alfred and Rev and Mrs Nels Pearson visited in Genoa Tuesday. Authentic Polk Post Card views distributed by Gloria and Connie Eaton. Rev Pearson preached at Swede Plains and Polk Methodist churches last Sunday forenoon. Mrs Olaf Alfred and Rev and Mrs Pearson attended the Polk Bible Camp meeting last Sunday afternoon.
In 1932 Topeka marked the first meeting with Franklin D Roosevelt and a 1949 wedding anniversary for the Nortons. Their children surprised them with a dinner at the Statler Hotel in Washington with an orchid corsage from Evelyn and Bill. Both serve in farm organizations and advocate agricultural betterment.
About seventy people attended the annual Fredrickson family picnic Sunday at Buckley Park in Stromsburg. Among those from Polk were Mr. and Marvin Fredrickson, Janie and Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Johnson, and Mrs. Charles Lytle.
The Young People's Conference of the Nebraska Evangelical Free Churches concluded with strong participation. Dr. David Anderson of Trinity Seminary Chicago taught daily expositions. Missionary Rev. Will Norton from Belgian Congo delivered challenging gospel messages and Rev. Joy Cummings of Anndale Minnesota led Evangelist sessions. The Polk Bible Camp in Polk Nebraska hosted the event with large Sunday crowds.
The Ladies Aid of the Evan Free Church will meet on Wednesday August 30 at 2 30 p m. Hostesses are Mrs Wilmar Redine and Mrs Roland Redine.
Alfred Gustafson, 94, is in a nursing home in Osceola after a fall at his son Oscar and wife’s home. He sustained a broken hip and will require bed rest for several months.
Sunny Sues 4H club gathered at Joyce Stevers home on August 15 with 12 members and 2 visitors. Members shared safety posters, discussed fair exhibits, and health project gains since March. Lunch was provided by Jo Ann Elliston and Julie Ann Larson. Next meeting is September 9 at Dist. 6 schoolhouse.

Arborville Church to hear Transit Watchwords sermon by Rev Earle Eaton next Sunday morning August 27 with children’s talk Shine Truth. Rev O L McCleary from Kansas with family visited Roy Stouffer. he once preached at Arborville. Mrs Gertie Quick of Los Angeles visited Polk area. Elmer Anderson hospitalized then home. Karl Deloff treated in Omaha. Betty Anderson from Polk attended Covenant Camp. M E Olson family, former Polk residents now in Chicago, visited Funk Nebraska.
The Blood Mobile will visit Stromsburg High School Gym on September 7 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for Folk Co. donors. A prior visit fell short by 16 pints after 21 rejects. General Marshall lauds the Red Cross National Blood Program and urges community donors to participate, noting the urgency and urging recruits to call locally.
Eleven members and two visitors gathered at Pam Cramer's home with Rosalie Nelson as assistant hostess on Web. Aug 16. They discussed taking food posters scrapbooks to the fair and reviewed their record book. The group sang songs and enjoyed lunch. Next meeting led by Sharon Adelson with Sharon Hoffman on Friday Aug 25.
The Gustafson family picnic was held Sunday at Buckley Park in Stromsburg with a picnic dinner. Attendees included Mrs Helen Rodgers and son Ralph of Pender and numerous Gustafson relatives from Stromsburg York Los Alamitos Osceola Polk and other areas.
A kitchen shower honored Miss Dorothy Johnson, bride-to-be, at the Rudolph Gustafson home Friday evening. Twenty five guests attended with a green and yellow motif, a two course luncheon, and gifts for the bride’s new name. Distanced guests included Mrs. Charles S. F. Johnson, Mrs. Roswill Johnson and daughter, Mrs. Charles Lytle Jr, Mrs. Coral Erickson, and Mrs. Dean Weimer.
Wednesday evening guests included Rev and Mrs Olson and family of Chicago and other local families. Thursday afternoon visits at Delbert Morris home featured Gertie Quick and several neighborhood ladies. A dinner Tuesday hosted by Edd Coover honored Ben Stromberg before his move to Denver, with multiple local families in attendance.
August 15 results show Legion beating Blue River 20 to 12 and Ike's Pioneers defeating North Blues 5 to 4. August 17 games feature Cornhuskers‑10 over Knotholers 9 and Johnsons defeating Commercial 17 to 8.
Mr and Mrs Will Kroger and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Kroger and Max joined Mr and Mrs Carl Steelquist for a Pioneer Park picnic in Lincoln Sunday to celebrate Lloyd Kroger's birthday anniversary.

Former Arborville resident Calvin Plessinger died at his Cornwallis Oregon home on August 9 1950. Mrs Emma Fedient wife of the late Frank Bedient died at her daughter Lucy Stratton’s Colorado home. Funeral services for Mrs Gedient will be held in York Saturday at 10 am at Metz Mortuary with burial at Arborville Cemetery.
The Pleasant Home 4H club met Friday evening at the Dick and Gary Harless residence with all but two members present. After the business meeting Mr Throckmorton outlined the County Fair program and trip to the fair. A lunch was served by Mrs Harless. The next meeting is set for Friday evening September 15 at Stanley Hanquist’s home.
Virgil Blase and family visited Lincoln relatives. Mrs L E Blase returned home. Baptist Church trustees met on parsonage lawn with a picnic. Chicago visitors Max Sonderland and wife rejoined by Miss Betty Ang. Mrs Sonderland is Vennette Ang. Baptist Sunday School picnic drew about 45. Local families entertained guests including the Angs, Eckdahl, Shenk, and Flodman households.
A humorous note from Yellowstone recounts Lewie Heiden escaping a bear after grabbing a camera during a family vacation. The piece then shifts to local society items, school notes, and several obituaries including J. E. McDaniel of Polk. It lists relatives, travel, and community events with names like Mrs. James, Delmar Hood, and Ed Larson.
Sheralee Hill and Marilyn Hahn won top honors in Polk County 4H Demonstration contest at Asce Ola. They beat 15 others to earn the right to represent Polk County at the state fair in September with their demonstration Wrapping Meat for the Locker. They showcased butcher wrap drug-store wrap aluminum foil stockinette and wrapped a roast, a T-bone steak and chicken along with various racking aids. Sheralee 15 and Marilyn 14 are daughters of Glenn Fill and Lloyd Hahn respectively, each with six years 4H club work. Sondra Hill another sister won blue with What to Do in Case of Fainting. Natalie Hahn acted as subject. All three and their Pleasant Home Makers 4H club were the only 4Hers from Folk County to enter.
Mrs Charles Wright and Mrs Ella Shenk hosted supper Friday at York with Mr and Mrs Warren Fightmaster. Emma Slater of North Platte, sister to Shenk and Fightmaster, joined. Other guests and local trips noted along with Merry Makers 4H Club winning first in singing at the County Fair.
