A playful column from The Headlight notes a chaotic week with old, worn, and mixed news in Stromsburg and Polk. It surveys Platte River fishing tales, comic strip obsessions, Mosquito chatter, and local banter including tall Swedes and Long Oscar humor.
Clyde Baker died Sunday August 12 after a long illness at Osceola Hospital. He was a longtime resident and community member. He is survived by family and friends. Funeral arrangements were to be announced.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Lutheran church in Hordville for Mrs. Ed Quick of Hordville who died Saturday in Osceola. She was the mother of Max Quick, Stromsburg schools principal, and is survived by her husband seven children and many grandchildren.
Friday evening guest Mrs Alvin Campbell of Boise Idaho visits the Nelson King home. Wednesday supper guests include Mr and Mrs Gene Bauer Sutton and Mr and Mrs Ed Saylor Central City. Delano Hahn and Karen Carlson wed in Minneapolis with the Werners staying with George Swanson. Fringe visits include Hermsmeier family from Cannes France three weeks in Gordon Fossberg’s home. Dan Baker Navy member from Memphis Tennessee visits Clyde Baker in serious illness. Grant Willits attends Johnson family reunion in Stromsburg with 34 guests from Alda Albion Platte Center Monroe Columbus Central City and Clarks.
Eight top high school science students from New York, Connecticut, Texas and Louisiana visited Polk County with Dr Vincent Schaefer and Mrs Schaefer to learn about grass planting advances. They stayed at Wilson Seed Farm and heard talks on grass technology and pasture management.
Mr and Mrs Harry Anderson and family were Sunday visitors in the Willard Larson home in Shelby. Don Riley of Central City was a Friday supper guest in the Nelson King home and joined Sally's birthday celebration at the Chas Norguest home with Henry Kisler and family Myron Norquest and family. Gordon Fossberg and family visited John Adams in Hastings Friday and Saturday. Paul Stevens spent last week with Lynn Benson in Charney to meet her granddaughter Lisa Lyn. Vern Eklund and family returned from Co op Camp Estes Park Colorado. James Ostrander and Elaine Ostrander of Columbus spent Saturday with their mother Mrs Frank Ostrander and Lois. Sunday visitors in the Harry Anderson home included Harry Kennel and family Lawrence Larson and family Julia Larson and Harold Anderson.
The children of Mr and Mrs H L Wurtz host an open house at the Wurtz home on Sunday August 19 from noon to 5 pm to honor their parents 40th wedding anniversary. No further invitations will be sent and guests are asked to forgo gifts.
Mrs. Joe Ehn and Mr and Mrs Edwin Doremus with Shirley Doremus returned from Wellington Colorado where they joined about 100 guests for the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Heiden. The Heidens, formerly of Polk, were married August 1 1937 at Immanuel Lutheran Polk by Rev Carl Juedgensen. The open house was hosted by their daughter Mrs Francis Patterson with guests from Ft Collins Greeley Denver Carr Solo and Liberty Kansas.
The first inoculation of the Type I Sabin Oral Vaccine will be given in Polk on Sunday September 2 at the high school from 1 to 5 p.m. Readers may call 765 3181 or return a coupon to Mrs Arnold Neu haus before Aug 18 to help estimate serum needs. The event is sponsored by the Polk Woman's Club and the Polk County Medical Society.
Bruce Johnson has gathered local musicians to perform instrumental and vocal music at the bandstand on Polk Main St Saturday evening August 18. He also plans a talent contest September 8 for Bean Day, with Polk Commercial Club prizes for winners. Details in next week’s paper.
The Polk Progress is printed in Stromsburg this week as The Headlight staff assists Ira Ready and Florence Anderson with the issue. The editor Mock Wilhelms and his family take a week’s vacation, and next week they plan to return to Polk.
Mr and Mrs Francis Tewell attended her sister's wedding in Trumbull on Sunday August 5th. The report lists numerous weekend visits and dinners among residents and relatives in Arborville, Stromsburg, Bradshaw, York, and surrounding areas. The piece notes vacations in the Black Hills and a rodeo trip, with many coffee gatherings and family connections across six states.

The GMG girls were presented at the August meeting of the Baptist Mission Circle. Sponsors Mrs. Don Manquist and Mrs. Wayne Creech introduced the group. Mrs Wayne Creech showed some of the craft items the girls had made. Mrs. Emma Horstman was guest hostess. Lunch hostesses included Mrs. P. W. Aker, Mrs. Elmer Hanquist, Mrs. Martin Jones, and Mrs. Walter Nelson.
August 20 football practice. August 22 and 23 high school registration. August 24 teachers meeting at 9. August 27 school starts half day with morning and noon bus runs. August 28 lunch program starts. August 30 seniors sell ads. September 3 Labor Day vacation. September 6 conference meeting. September 7 football at Stromsburg.
The Story Hour sponsored by the Pork Woman's Club held its final meeting on Wednesday August 1. After the session the group had lunch in the park. Twenty three children received books from the club for attending at least six meetings.
The Trinity ULCA met August 8 for its regular meeting with Frances Tenniges and Helen Bayer presenting Here Comes the Bride, a mother daughter discussion on Christian wedding. Helen Karloff and Kathy Brazda performed A Perfect Love with piano. Edna Crow led the business meeting and spoke on the Lutheran Church Women convention in Minneapolis. Hostesses were Jim Karloff, Glen Brazda, with Hannah Carlson guest hostess.

The Arborville Rough Riders 4-H Saddle Club led by Max Jones and George Wochner trained their horses for the York County Fair. Members entered in pleasure and reining classes and other events winning 1 purple, 7 blue, 10 red, and 11 white ribbons. Participants included Leanne Gustafson, Kenny Bills, Vernon Crow, Bob Cline, Joel Stevens, Tom Stevens, and Allan Neuhaus among others.
The WSCS of the Polk Methodist Church met August 2 in the church parlors with 35 members and 15 visitors. Mrs. Samuels presided. a bazaar and turkey supper were planned for August. Mrs. Prind was named a delegate to attend the School of Missions in August 2024, and Dr. Gretchen Berggren spoke on Congo mission work.
A daughter, Patricia Rose, was born Sunday August 12 to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ziegelbein at Central City hospital. The baby weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces.
