Opinion column skewers Nixon administration stance on inflation as a war tactic linking poverty and crime fights. Attacks economists for jobless growth and Agnew rhetoric, praises Nebraska’s environmental concerns and warns against industrial overuse of resources and pollution.
Polk schools announce several new teachers for the upcoming term. Beth Hansen joins Polk Elementary to teach fifth grade after earning a science degree from the University of Nebraska and minors in art and music. Harry Brown will teach high school social studies. he holds a BA from Kearney State College and served as a military policeman. Andrea Thorpe, a graduate of Iowa State College, will teach Spanish in Polk and Stromsburg schools, living in Stromsburg where her husband is faculty. Hazel Hill returns to teach second grade after earning a bachelor’s degree and completing graduate work. Irene Sundberg will teach sixth grade with a degree from Kearney State College.
The passage argues that humans overestimate mastery of the environment, causing harm while believing they direct natural forces. It cautions against hubris that leads to ecological damage and calls for humility in using natural resources.
Beginning August 24 football practice sessions will be held twice daily at 7 30 a m and 3 30 p m. Physical exams for all Polk High School athletes will be at Polk Medical Clinic August 18 at 1 P M. See Coach Richard Hoops before taking the examination. He has permits and examination cards and preliminary instructions for the athletes.
Polk wins the Little Six League midget baseball tournament with a 7 2 final over Shelby while Osceola takes third by beating Benedict 17 7 in six innings. Polk pitcher Tom Mundt fanned 14 with one hit allowed and Mark Albin homered. Gate receipts total 400 with profits after expenses. The oldest girls softball squad won the 15 and over title at Gresham defeating Gresham 12 5 in eight innings as Polk also beat Benedict 17 5. Donations to the recreation fund total 873.13 with several contributors listed.
The Fossberg family gathered Sunday at Hard Lake for the annual reunion. Attendees included Irvin Fossberg of Grand Island and many relatives from Des Moines Nebraska City Lincoln Fremont Archer Polk Has ing and surrounding areas with numerous spouses and children present.
Mrs. C. E. Penrose and two sons of Wichita Kansas visited from Tuesday to Friday in the Mrs. McCoy Mervin Samuels and Myron Nor quest homes. They left Friday to visit his parents in Mattison Tl. Mr. Penrose is serving in Vietnam for a year.
The Polk Public Schools in Polk Nebraska report continued Class A accreditation for the 1970 71 school year. Action approved by the State Board of Education in Lincoln on June 12 1970 after recommendation by the accreditation committee.
Funeral services for Imogene Christine Hanquist 50 Polk were at First Baptist Polk with Rev Gene Wood officiating. Burial at Lindale Cemetery Polk Nebraska. She died Sunday in Lincoln after a long illness. She was born July 9 1920 in Polk to Elmer Hanquist and Til He Hanquist. She taught in Polk and surrounding communities. Survived by parents a brother Donald and sister in law Maxine two nieces two nephews fiance Harold Jackson of Fort Atkinson Wisconsin and many relatives and friends.
A baby boy named Thomas Eugene Ostrander was born Saturday at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital Central City weighing 6 pounds 6 1/2 ounces to Mr and Mrs Robert Ostrander. Lt and Mrs Ronald Carlson of Duluth Minnesota welcomed a baby girl Jill Susan on August 3 weighing 9 pounds 2 ounces. Mrs Carlson's parents Mr and Mrs Albin Benson visited in the Carlson home.
Wayne Stevens of Ewing stayed as an overnight guest in the James Lindburg home on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Max Lott and Kirk of Shelby visited the Ernie Lott home on Thursday evening. Mrs Alvena Lind is visiting relatives in Boise Idaho this week.
The public is invited to a program of piano organ duets and vocal specials at the First Baptist Church Sunday August 2 at 7 30 PM.
The Polk Bean Days festival runs September 5 and 6 with a parade for all ages and prize winning floats. Free beans and barbe cued beef at noon, afternoon tractor pull and children’s races, and barbecued chicken dinner. Evening program and American Legion dance wrap up the event, with a teen dance Friday and R&L Carnival rides on Main Street.
Oscar W Olson writes of building fences for farmers in summer, visiting Osceola Stromsburg Polk Hardville and Clarks in Nebraska and South Dakota. He notes rain received after his trip, crops looking better, and invites Norris to Prairie Village Madison SD while sharing local gossip and humor.
Perry Green of Brush and Cole Bedient visited Mrs. Bessie Green and guest Olive Gruber of New York Thursday evening. Brad Albin, recently working at Atkinson, returned home on Saturday.
