Proprietorship of the Holmes Cafe will change on Friday May 1 as Mr and Mrs E D Clason become the new owners. The Clasons, retired teacher and athletic coach from central Nebraska, have lived in Alda with their four children including a high school senior.
Alphe Levene will leave Polk for a railroad post in St Paul Nebraska around mid May with his family moving the first week of June. The Levene family includes Alpha Jr Skeet Bobby and Joyce and no Polk replacement agent is yet named.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Lamy Erie entertained at dinner Sunday along with guests Mr and Mrs Clayton Leib Frart Lincoln Mrs Elsie Johnson of Omaha Mr Lyman Lampshire and sons Hardville Mr and Mrs Donald Penson of Green River Wyoming were week end guests of his parents Also present were Mr and Mrs Oscar Person Sunday dinner guests included Mr and Mrs Shawrence Peterson and son Ann Salchow and Mrs Ed Arney of Clarks Evening callers were Mr and Mrs Forrest Hecht Grand Island Mr and Mrs Lloyd Growcock and Mr and Mrs Fred Growcock of Clarks
The marriage of Pvt. Clarence Blade and Miss Bonnie Wert was solemnized Saturday evening at the Danish Lutheran Church in Hampton. Clarence, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, will report to Fort Lewis, Washington on May 7 for overseas duty.
Two Navy youths, Don Miller and Arthur Bates, enjoyed a day aboard Miller’s ship the U S S Princeton in Yokosuka Harbor Japan. Bates later found Miller after his ship anchored in the same harbor aboard U S S Miphda.
The city announces a near identical four team league for 1953 with Johnsons Chevrolet Polk Bankers Co op Oilers and the American Legion returning as sponsors. Dale Lindburg and Swede Lind head the Chevrolet and Banker squads with Bud Bolton guiding the Oilers and Arnold Neuhaus Bob Baack and Don Ostberg leading the Legion.
Mr and Mrs Frank Bolton visited Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Martin Hoffman Sr in a social gathering.
The Churches of Polk plan 4-H Sunday during Sunday services with 4-H members seated in their churches and reciting the pledge. Sondra Hill will present her prize winning ovation Wanted More Statesmen at Swede Plain and Baptist, and a musical number is planned at Evangelical Free Church with Daryl and Larry Nyberg performing.
On Saturday Poppy Day the American Legion Auxiliary asks you to wear a memorial Poppy in honor of war dead from the Argonne to Korea. Made by disabled veterans for the help of disabled veterans and the aid of war widows and orphans. Wear a Poppy, give as generously as you can.
Gerry King dominated the conference track at Columbus, winning the mile with a 4:52.5 time that ranks seventh in the state. Polk teammates scored in several events as Clark, Genoa, St. Paul, and Silver Creek led the team standings with Polk fifth. Stromsburg and Osceola trailed.
Five people were injured when a crash west of Polk occurred last Wednesday afternoon after gravel caused a car driven by Mrs. R. Nelson to crash into a tree. Billie Nelson suffered a broken leg and was hospitalized in Grand Island with a lengthy recovery ahead. Mrs. Clara Anderson and Mrs. Walter Nelson had leg injuries needing stitches, while Karen Nelson and the other passenger had minor cuts and bruises. Billie will remain in the hospital for weeks with a cast planned after initial treatment.
Mr and Mrs Alfred Jones of Hardville were dinner guests Sunday of their son Vern and family. Mr and Mrs Wallace Sandell hosted relatives at dinner and luncheon Sunday from the Don Uptom family of Cedar Rapids John Adams family Hastings Gordom Fossberg and Mr and Mrs Frank Fossberg.
Miss Sheralee Hill won the Wesleyan Weekly column naming contest at Nebraska Wesleyan University. A cash prize was awarded by the paper’s business manager, and the editor staff hopes the name Wesleyanotes will become a permanent feature of the paper.
Polk Legion Post plans to organize a Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack within the coming month. A committee of three veterans Everett Green Arnold Neuhaus and Alton Wilhelms was named to lead the effort with Mr Flaming a national council member and district/state leaders guiding the setup.
Polk High School seniors staged the comedy Father Be Calm on April 21 in the school auditorium. The Hamilton home setting featured Gaylen Holmes and Shirley Hahn with a large cast including Marilyn played by Virginia Harding and Richard by Ervin Schulze. Students delivered humor with supporting roles by Lois Miller Don Nyberg Janice Jones and others and musical numbers by Marilyn Hahn Dean Lindburg. Superintendent Warren sponsored and directed the play and received appreciation gifts from the class.
James Brazda of near Wilbur Nebraska becomes the new owner of the John Deere Implement Business in Polk after week long negotiations with Leo Wurtz. The business stays with Wurtz during May while Brazda takes over on May 1. Brazda has farmed in Saline County 14 miles west of Wilbur and is holding his farm sale today April 30. Wurtz plans for the future are indefinite.
Christine Louise Gustafson born April 20 at Stromsaburg Hospital weighing 7 pounds 1.02 ounces to Mr and Mrs Doyle Gustafson. Douglas Eugene Lampire born April 26 at Keesler Air Base Mississippi to 3c and Mrs Eugene Lamp shire.
IM G Lindburg writes in the May Electric Farmer that Polk County Rural Public Power District now serves 1550 farm and rural consumers after 18 years. Nellie G Benson as vice president is the only woman in the state on a rural system board. He warns farmers to oppose Washington schemes that could give utilities control of federal power. The issue targets about 70 000 rural readers.
Twenty nine ladies and friends from the Polk Woman's Club visited Hastings on Friday April 24. They left Polk early and returned after dinner, visiting the Made-O-Day Blouse Factory the State Hospital at Ingleside The House of Yesterday and the Naval Depot. Rain threatened but the day remained enjoyable.
