Don’t Go Fishing Sayings and Weather Warnings

Polk High Students Shine In District Music Contest

Polk High School music students excelled at the district contest in Central City with 19 schools entered across three classes. Director Ellen Spray led 26 Polk entries, earning 10 Superiors, 11 Excellents, 3 Goods and 2 Fairs. Notable performances included Arnold Merchant and the boys quartet earning first 1s, Shelly Ramsey's flute solo a fourth 1, and multiple 1s and 2s across solos and ensembles.

Summer School Begins May 27 at Polk Elementary

Letters to parents were mailed for Polk Elementary School summer session for grades 1 to 6. The program runs May 27 through July 5 with Memorial Day and Fourth of July holidays. Rural transportation will be provided by the school. Supervising teacher is Mrs Jean Nielsen and staff includes Allyn Chambers, Mildred Sterner, Imogene Hanquist, and Karl Adamson in various subjects.

Burning Cornstalks Not Necessary In Nebraska

Forty years ago burning cropland stalks aided harvest but modern equipment handles residues. Field cover reduces wind and water erosion and lowers dust storm risk. USDA says burned fields lose all protection. Fire harms fence rows and wildlife habitats. Mr and Mrs Robert Willits attended the Sundberg Dill wedding in Hastings.

Ester Lackey Golden Wedding celebrated with 150 guests

Mr and Mrs Ester Lackey marked their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Polk Methodist church parlors. Host families included Mr and Mrs Harl Stevens and Miss Monti Bush registered guests. Out-of-town guests came from Crystal Michigan to Clarks.

April Rain Lifts Farmers as Ditch Water Rebounds

Three months of 1968 were dry with January at .06 inches and February at .48. March yielded nothing, but April brings showers adding 3.80 inches to the year. The heaviest rain of 1.78 inches fell early Saturday morning April 20, while fishermen and youths gathered nightcrawlers along curbs later that morning.

Kindergarten Round Up set for May 2 at grade school gym

The 1968 Kindergarten Round Up occurs Thursday May 2 with visitation at 9 00 registration 9 45 to 10 30 in the elementary school gym where coffee and rolls will be served. Letters were mailed to parents of prospective students. If a child will be in kindergarten next year and a letter was not received, notify the grade school office.

Peterson Polk Mrs Betty Ang Stromsburg Mrs Cecelia Hult Stromsburg Mr Charles Nuttleman Gresham Mr Wilmont Crozier Osceola Mr Oscar Olson Osceola Larry Engel Stromsburg with several dismissals noted. Major surgery was performed on Mrs Wallace Sandell at Bryan Memorial in Lincoln. Others reported include Mrs Mervin Samuels returning home from Central City hospital and Mr Leo Bowlby of Hordville being treated there. Reuben Gustafson of Hordville was admitted and released at Central City hospital, Arnon Dover and additional Central City hospital patients noted.

ABC Club Advances From First Aid To Entomology Study

Members of the ABC Club met at George Ditloff home after school on April 8 to conclude first aid and begin entomology. Barbara Klute joined, bringing membership to twelve. Lunch was served by Mrs Ditloff. The Junior Red Cross First Aid Test was given by Mr George Sweet on April 17 at Arborville Community Hall. All passed. cards will be awarded on Family Night, May 3, at the hall. First Aid Kits were shown to parents. Lunch at the meeting was by Mrs John Wochner and Mrs Owen Bedient. The next meeting is May 13 at Arborville Community Hall.

Baptist Mission Circle Sets April Meeting at Church

The Baptist Mission Circle met at the church in April with devotions led by Mrs Dean Lindburg. Mrs Edward Reckner planned a stewardship program titled Who Am I. Barbara, Beverly Glasser and Ron Adams sang a trio. Guest hostess Mrs Emma Anderson. Lunch served by Mrs Martin Jones Mrs Wilbur Whitacre and Mrs Ivan Johnson. Mr and Mrs Walter Stohl visited Robert Stohl in Osceola Wednesday evening.
