The Polk village announces Clean Up days from April 13 to April 25 to allow alumni to tidy yards and alleys. Residents are warned not to burn leaves on brick streets as trucks will collect rubbish and haul it away. burning rubbish will reduce pickup.
Memorial service for Arthur Gustafson held at the Methodist Church. Everett Green presented the memorial on behalf of the church, accepted by Leslie Adelson. Sondra Hill performed The Lord's Prayer as part of the service.
A family comedy in three acts titled Father Be Calm will be performed in the Polk Hirth School Auditorium next Tuesday April 21. The cast of thirteen seniors is directed by Mr. Warren with admission priced at 60c 35c and 25c. Mr and Mrs Harold Johnson and their Swede Home family were luncheon guests Thursday evening after the Messiah program with Mr and Mrs Reuben Hankquist. Polk friends of Neal Gallent, former coach here, will be interested to know he has been elected as a member of the York school board.
Strong winds toppled trees and damaged businesses in Polk area including Cramer Craft Shop where a large window shattered. Wind gusts also ripped a canvas awning and damaged stock tanks while spreading debris through the town. The American Legion auxiliary met to plan Poppy Day activities for May 2 with bake sale donations and committee updates.
The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union held an institute at the Baptist Church on Tuesday with devotions in the morning led by Mrs. Edick Anderson and Rev. Elwood Anderson. A guest speaker, Mrs. John Falk of Stromsaburre, spoke on the organization’s work. An Omaha trip by bus for Tee Capades included many church members.
Army cutworms are widespread across the county prompting farmers to seek remedies. Recommendations favor two pounds of toxaphene per acre during warm weather or a noisome bran bait in cooler days, with bait treated in molasses to attract feeding. A standard bran bait blends bran molasses and poison to form a crumbly mash for application.
The Stromsburg Choral Union and director Carroll L. Brown thank Polk residents for the opportunity to perform Messiah last Thursday. They acknowledge rain and express appreciation by returning $20 of the collection to the Polk Ministerial Association for its use.

Dick Sagehorn suffered a painful accident last Wednesday when he caught his arm in a belt while grinding feed. Hospitalization was required until Sunday when he returned home. He is progressing satisfactorily.
A large Polk County gathering marked the 6th annual Bankers dinner honoring 4-H leaders. Mrs. Lloyd Hahn received a ten year pin, while Miss Sheraler Hill Carlyn Strand and Mr. Leslie Adelson earned a two year plaque. About 125 attendees from across the county, including County Council and Extension Board members, heard Wes Antes speak.
Doyle D Gustafson of Polk is named among 42 seniors singled out for high scholarship at the University of Nebraska Honors Convocation in the Coliseum. Dr Ben Mark Cherrington, regional director of the Institute of International Education, Denver, will address more than 300 students honored for superior academic work.
The Jolly Junior 4-H Club met with Steve Funk as president Gary Green called the meeting to order. Funk and Green demonstrated driving a nail straight. The next meeting is set for April 25 at Freddie Dorn Burelli’s. Mrs. Funk served lunch.
Mrs. Frank Davis and Miss Nellie Morris spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Kenneth Davis in North Bend enjoying a family visit in the town setting.
The Softball Committee invites past managers players and fans to a Monday evening gathering at the Fire Hall following the Polk Commercial Club meeting at 9.00 to set up this season's league adjust player rosters and possibly add a high school boys team with plans to form four balanced teams.
Douglas Warren weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce was born to Mr and Mrs Gerald Holm on a Wednesday in Osceola Hospital. Mr and Mrs Edwin Doremus welcomed a son at Stromsburg Hospital on Saturday. Gail Glennis Widga weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces arrived at Stromsburg Hospital on Monday evening.
At the Polk Woman's Club April meeting 21 members and 3 visitors attended. After opening with flag salute and American creed, committee reports were shared and plans set for a Hastings bus trip on April 24. Delegates were chosen for the State Woman's Club convention in Grand Island April 14 to 16. Hostesses served a luncheon with a Easter theme. Mr. M. A Mille Jr. of Osceola spoke on Legal Status and clarified legal terms and policies.
Mrs Dean Shoup attended a Monday afternoon luncheon as a guest of Mrs Norman Reetz.
