Polk Progress sponsors a first Sunday in May kite flying contest weather permitting with prizes for smallest and largest flying kites most original and best decorated. Entry open to all ages homemade kites only and balloons may accompany non flying enthusiasts with two purposes for pre pre teeners and to aid kites.
Clarence Meerkatz LaVaughn Adelson Dean Ostberg C Marvin Fredrickson Burdette Flodman Dick Neeman Don Ostberg form a pool committee roster. The list highlights local officials and civic volunteers involved in community recreation planning.
The American Legion Auxiliary reports total Heart Fund Drive contributions for 1967 amounting to 279.17 dollars. Co chairs Donna Werner and Corrine Adelson coordinated town and group gifts including Osceola and Stromsburg sub totals. Countywide receipts reached 1240.97 dollars across multiple towns and clubs.
Enrollment at Polk Grade School rose from 188 to 208 with 22 new students this year. Recent enrollees include Pam first grade Terry second Julie fourth Alan fifth and Dianne sixth from families such as Alford Green formerly of Grand Island and Ricky Hadstad who joined second grade. Two students transferred out and Polk district total reaches 313 while high school stays at 105.
Polk Gideons held a Saturday rally at Polk Community Hall after a cabinet meeting at Evangelical Free Church. Reuben Hanquist MC'd the evening program with J L Grantham of Scotia delivering the banquet message. Mr and Mrs Wallace Sandell hosted, banquet prepared by Mrs Margaret Johnson and helpers. Ninety two guests attended.
The American Legion Auxiliary will meet April 10 at 5:00 P.M. to sew carpet rags and will have an 8:00 P.M. meeting. Bring a sack lunch. Rags for rag making appreciated. Contact Mrs Arnold Neu haus. Plastic bottles to be delivered to Beatrice on Monday April 17. Please bring all you have.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Bowmaster announce the engagement of their daughter Kathleen Kay Bowmaster to Regy J Green son of Mr and Mrs Everett Green of Lincoln and formerly Polk Kathleen is a senior at Nebraska Wesleyan University affiliated with Willard Sorority Cardinal Key and Kappa Delta Pi Honorary He is a Nebraska Wesleyan graduate pursuing a MA in economics at the University of Nebraska a member of Phi Kappa Tau Blue Key Pi Gamma Mu and Wesleyan-W club.
Dale Lindburg and Richard Sealey Jr won the school board seats with 98 and 87 votes respectively as 171 ballots were cast. Incumbents Dean Myers and Ed Saylor won 2 year terms with 94 and 73 votes while Vern Jones and Kenneth Stewart received 49 and 28 votes.
Calvary Lutheran Church Swede Home dedicates its new Hillgren Lane pipe organ on Sunday April 9 at 7 30 p m with guest organist Mrs Douglas Gustafson of Mead a Midland College Fremont graduate and University of Iowa master’s degree holder who has taught at Concordia College Seward and serves as organist at a large Fremont church. The $9 000 organ funded by congregation gifts was installed by Snyder Neuman Organ Company of Omaha. Public welcome a free will offering to cover recital expenses.
Windy dry March sparked numerous fires across Polk County. The department battled grass and trash fires from March 9 to March 30 including a silent run and a blaze near Progress office. Donations totaling $110 were received from Ben Peterson Strand Peterson State Farm Mutual and local residents.
The Mother-Daughter banquet in Hordville with Nebraska Centennial theme attracted 293 attendees in the school gym. The program featured music by Mrs. Dwayne Hahn, pictures by Verna Ericksen, a 1929 home movie, and toasts by several hosts. The event honored many families across four generations, including the oldest mother Mrs. Will Cohagen and the youngest daughter Miss Tammi Carne.
Mr and Mrs Hollis Stromberg of Clarks mark their twenty fifth wedding anniversary with a open house Sunday April sixteenth from two to five o'clock at the VFW Hall in Clarks. Mrs Stromberg was Doris Lindahl of Clarks. Relatives and friends invited.
Mrs. Will Garling is a patient in the Aurora hospital. Mrs. Louie Blase was a patient in the Aurora hospital from Tuesday until Friday.
Chader assists department teams as they battle a fire northwest of Hordville. Fire crews coordinate efforts to contain flames and protect nearby structures. No injuries reported at this time. Local authorities investigate the cause and monitor hotspots.
