An essay recalls the long Eastern blackout of 1964 or 1965 and a boy's impact on a utility pole that caused it. It reflects on switching from coal to electric or gas ranges, the idea of independence, and how progress created new wasteful problems like trash burners and ash disposal.
Mr E M Erickson was honored on his 80th birthday with a Sunday afternoon gathering at the Erickson home attended by 28 relatives. Guests included Norman Evelyn Erickson of Lincoln Marvin Ehn of Ceresco Myrtle Ehn Central City Alvin Stranberg Hordville Elvera Nyberg and others. Lunch followed the afternoon visit. Local relatives and guests also spent time with extended family in Omaha and Columbus visits noted.
A March 29 storm dumped ice and wet snow across York County causing more than 5000 poles to break and widespread outages. REA and NPPD reported weeks of repair ahead with Polk and surrounding areas facing water, heating, and communication disruptions as residents and guards scrambled to restore essential services.

The April Church Night Fellowship at Polk Methodist Church begins Sunday at 6 00 p m with Songs Through the Ages. Program committee members include James and Robert Lindburg Earl Dennis Stevens Kenneth Stewart and Rodney Johnson. Each family to bring a salad. sandwiches and coffee provided.
Mrs. Ruth Lindburg spent the weekend in Lincoln with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bousquet. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harden and boys of Holdrege and Wayne Lindholm of Lincoln visited the Conrad Lindholm home. Mrs Oscar Lundberg and Mrs Glen Babcock visited Emma Johnson and Sadie Clark at Parkview Home and called on friends. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Lampshire attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Meyers in Beatrice.
A hectic day with kids prompts a mother to chase them away from the doorbell and laundry. After warning them not to ring again she escalates to a threat of spanking. The wheel into the scene ends with a repairman van leaving and the TV show missed.
