Plattsmouth faces a housing shortage with rental properties scarce for workers and families. Burlington railroad employees earning 125 to 150 dollars monthly struggle to find modern homes, risking relocation to Lincoln. Citizens urge builders and lenders to fund several cottages to encourage growth and stable inhabitants.
Report from Omaha hospital states Mrs. Herman Bestor is recovering well from surgery. She is getting along nicely and ahead of expectations, pleasing friends and family in this city who have awaited news from her bedside.
M B Allen resumed duties at Havelock this morning after a brief visit with his family over Sunday. He remains stiff and sore from the earlier accident in Havelock but is able to attend to his work.
Mrs Anna Riley aged 77 died at her home in south Lawn after a week of illness. A native of County Cavan Ireland she moved to the United States with her husband who preceded her in death. Survived by children John Riley William Shea Susan Shields Margaret McCall Hugh Riley Ed Riley and Ray Sawyer funeral tomorrow at 10 30 a m at St John s Roman Catholic Church with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
The Nehawka mill is leased to Grothe Brothers of Ashland who will take possession around the first of October. They are practical millers and promise to bring up to date improvements to boost the town. A new 60 horsepower oil engine will be installed to cut costs. The News welcomes them and pledges local business support.
The J. E. Douglass residence on High School Hill is almost finished and ready for occupancy within a week or two. The nine room mansion features modern bathrooms sinks and other up to date amenities making it one of the most comfortable and handsome homes in the city and a local improvement.
An itemized listing shows how each precinct and city contributes to funding the new county jail. Totals for land personal and village real estate sum to 10 693.22 with about 1 400 additional from railroads and other corporations.
Charles Peterson Jr. of Chicago and his friend Fred Wallace paused in town yesterday to visit Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Peterson and Mrs. J. C. Linderman. They travel to the Pacific coast by Southern Pacific route via Kansas City and return northward. Peterson runs two Chicago automobile garages.
A county court hearing admitted the last will of William Ost of Liberty precinct to probate. Mrs. Albertina Ost named executrix attended with son William and daughters Misses Edith and Alma Ost of Union.
Local dealers report plentiful coal stocks for fall and early winter. Miners worked steadily all summer and storage is large, with no broad strike expected. soft coal prices range from five to nine dollars per ton while hard coal sits between eleven and forty two dollars, suggesting only a long cold winter could prompt a shortage.
Governor Morehead designates October 9 and 10 as statewide Good Roads Days urging county and village boards city councils and commercial clubs to mobilize efforts for road building and maintenance. He stresses public progress depends on efficient transportation and calls for broad citizen participation and practical improvements. October 9 and 10, 1913, are set aside to demonstrate concrete road and street improvements.
E. A. Blue and family of Omaha arrived in the city and will settle here after Mr. Blue purchased the F. E. Phobus property in the south part. Mr and Mrs F G Fricke come home after several months in Europe visiting relatives across the German empire. Their son Dr Albert Fricke of South Omaha stays behind to study at German medical colleges before resuming practice in Omaha.
N EK Peoples purchased the Sol Adamson residence at the corner of Seventh and Washington Avenue and plans major remodeling, painting and papering. With scarce housing, the purchase allows securing a desirable home for his family after renovations.
Stephen Cecil 59 a resident for 35 years died yesterday afternoon after an 18 month spinal illness. He leaves wife son Hugh Devil daughter Estelle and siblings Isaac Jaspar and Mrs V M Mullis. A. O. U. W. lodge No 8 member funeral Thursday at 2 pm from his home with Rev. W L Austin officiating at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Frank R. Gobelman, local artist and decorator, awarded the contract to redecorate the government post office building. Work will include interior and roof renovations at several hundred dollars and start soon.
James Hunter Jr his wife and infant visited over Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs James Hunter in this city. They traveled from Gibson on Saturday evening aboard No 2.
Mr and Mrs James Root celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at home with an evening reception in Murray. The event featured an orchestra, songs by local singers, a wedding march, and a dining room in gold and white. The Roots, longtime Cass county residents, were joined by 16 grandchildren and five great grand children, with several relatives from nearby towns attending.
Adolph Schilling and his wife of Norfolk Nebraska have been visiting Co W Haffke and family for several days and returned home this morning on an early Burlington train.
