The steamer Mary List from Kansas City brought equipment for river work near the city. The cargo includes two pile drivers, smaller barges, a pumping barge, two steam lines, two power launches, and provisions for the crew. Workers will erect shacks and buildings while cutting willows for rip-rapping and mat weaving to protect the river banks as the project extends.
The Cass County federation of women’s clubs met in Weeping Water with about 200 delegates. Officers elected for the coming year were President Mrs. W. S. McGrew of Louisville, Vice President Mrs. Ray Norris of Avoca, and Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. R. E. Foster of Union. The next federation meeting was set for Avoca in 1934.
Mr and Mrs E M Griffin announce their sons Alfred and Arley Griffin are now in service aboard the U S S Salt Lake City. Alfred has served on the Atlantic coast and Norfolk and is sent to San Diego where Arley has been stationed for six years. Arley has three years at the base and will report for sea service as the ship makes Bremerton its home station.
W A Galloway learned from Oklahoma that his mother Mrs Margaret Galloway of Lydia aged ninety three fell and fractured both hips. The injury is serious for her age.
Judge James T. Begley of the Second District has been summoned by the state Supreme Court to sit with the court in Lincoln for the week starting October 16. His participation requires a temporary change to his Sarpy County term opening then. Begley, a veteran jurist, has frequently served with the state high court in major cases.
Lincoln reports a Civilian Conservation Corps enrollment for Cass county with a quota of nine men aged 18 to 25. Selection will be by the Cass county relief commission under R C Biart of Bellevue and based on financial need, not relief status, with locations including Douglas and Lancaster counties and the cities of Omaha and Lincoln.
County reemployment heads face a reduced local hire total as river project labor spreads across Cass Mills and possibly Sarpy counties. Unemployed workers from adjacent counties may share the work on a 60 40 Iowa split, diminishing Cass county first call prospects. Representatives will visit with Sarpy and Cass leaders to review the plan and defend local priority.
The gift night sponsored by the city business men will begin earlier, starting next Wednesday at 8 o clock instead of the current 8 30. The event occurs every Wednesday evening in the city.
The Burlington plans a new streamlined train between Lincoln and Kansas City via Omaha and Plattsmouth on the main line to Pacific Junction and KR line south. It aims to run by year’s start at about 100 mph, reducing Kansas City Omaha travel time and prompting future high speed service expansions.
The high school glee clubs announce officers for the year. Girls Glee Club officers include Reichstadt as president Welch as secretary and Meisinger as librarian for the 11:15 group and Gilmour as president Bestor as secretary and McCarty as librarian for the 2:00 group. Boys Glee Club lists Knoflicek as president Frick as secretary Jensen as librarian for the 11:15 session and Gilmour as president Varga as secretary Pittman as librarian for the 2:00 session. Accompanists are Jane Boedeker Anna McCarty and Aimee Thomas with Jean Knorr as junior high accompanist. The Boys Odette group includes Adam Kalina Woolcott Garnett Knoflicek Miror Jensen Taylor. Girls Sextette features Rosencrans Gilmour Wells Bestor Trively Boedeker with Jane Boedeker replacing Gertrude Brink.
Miss Mary Peterson of this city was operated on Wednesday at Clarkson hospital in Omaha for appendicitis. She had been in frail health and the operation aimed to give permanent relief. She is reported to have come through the procedure very nicely and friends wish her a quick recovery to resume her usual activities.
W. R. Holly and C. C. Sedgway district court clerk will leave Saturday for Chicago to attend the American Legion national convention and Century of Progress exposition. They will travel with the band of Omaha post No. 1, the largest post in the nation. Sedgway has played with the band for years and attended Detroit and Boston conventions.
Henry Knabe a prominent Nehawka resident came to the city Wednesday afternoon to attend to business and visit friends.
Frank Beal, former Plattsmouth resident and Burlington employee, was injured Wednesday night when two cars on Union Pacific freight train No. 72 derailed in Gibson yards. He served as conductor on the train and was treated at Immanuel Hospital in satisfactory condition. cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The Class of 1923 wins the school football ticket drive with 95 points while Sophomores 312 Freshmen 256 and Juniors 224. Senior leaders Helen Gilmour and Margaret Taylor steered the campaign as committees recorded strong class participation and sportsmanlike effort.
The George W. Condon Cunningham & Cole Construction Co. fleet of eleven barges headed by a large steamer and two launches passed through this city Thursday afternoon. The fleet stalled about two hours at the Platte mouth before reaching deep water near Folsom Point, signaling increased Missouri River activity since the early steamboat era.
Dave Wallengren of the city at Clarkson hospital Omaha will receive a blood transfusion to improve his condition after a pneumonia attack and recent surgery left him weak. Doctors hope this will strengthen him enough to return home.
A Friday reception at First Methodist parlor welcomed Rev. and Mrs. C. O. Troy back for a fourth year in the state conference. The event, organized by the aid society and Social Workers, featured a piano program, tributes from local clergy, and a $25 gift presented by Mrs. William Baird. Charges filed in Omaha accuse Joseph Veneziano and William Griffin of kidnapping and false arrest. Lester Wunderlich and James Van Bibber of Nehawka were held and threatened by Tony Tarascio and others after Wunderlich aided Van Bibber in obtaining tools from Frank Martini. Van Bibber later escaped. Wunderlich rode to Fort Crook to report to the Sarpy sheriff. No formal police briefing followed the incident, spurring further inquiry.
An extra gang and local maintenance of way crew operate on the east side of the Missouri River laying tracks for the new river construction project. Materials have already been delivered at Pacific Junction and will move to the work site once sidetracks are ready.

Mr and Mrs Alex Schlisch departed Friday night on the Ak Sar Ben over the Burlington for Chicago where they will spend a few days at the Century of Progress exposition. James K Pollock Frank Nesubauer and John Conrad will also travel to Chicago for several days to see the exposition and its points of interest.
Daughters of E H Wescott and L L Wiles returned home Friday evening to Elizabeth New Jersey and Brooklyn bringing a welcome surprise. Mrs G W Hughes of Brooklyn accompanied them from the east. Mrs Norlin visits mark first homecoming in two years for Marguerite Wiles and first Christmas for Helen Murdick. The group traveled 1318 miles, arriving last night and staying until mid October.
Judge C Wertman of South Bend precinct with a law office in Ashland transacted legal business in Plattsmouth. A civil case will bring him here again next term. He represents defendant Jack Woods in a murder case pending for trial in Saunders county district court.
The Platters of 1525 defeated Glenwood high 7 to 6 in a hard fought season opener. Starters Hiner and Enoffieck contributed key plays while Ronne at fullback sparked a steady ground game. George Parish of Omaha refereed the contest.
A Friday evening meeting at St. John's School drew large attendance as the Catholic Parent-Teacher Association discussed plans for the coming year and completed organizational details. Edna Mae Petersen presented a reading and piano piece, Anna Merie Rea played piano, Charles Eznek and James Sandin performed a violin duet, and Jack Kubicka staged a comedy sketch from St. John’s graduates.
