Plattsmouth high school juniors hosted a pirate themed banquet Saturday at the American Legion building. Decorations featured skulls pirates parrots and treasure scenes with hand painted programs and a St Paul church prepared menu named pieces of eight and treasure items.
The annual school exhibit at the Columbian and Central buildings and the high school, with Wintersteen and Mercerville work, opens Friday evening at 7. An 8:30 program by the junior high music department directed by Misses Garrett and Williams follows. Open house Sunday May 21 from 2 to 4, all free.
Mr and Mrs D C Robertson of Lincoln announce the engagement of their daughter Lois to Gerald W Vallery son of Mr and Mrs W J Vallery former Plattsmouth residents The wedding is set for June 4 with many old friends in the city wishing the couple happiness
Mr and Mrs C E Haney from Hollywood California are visiting the Hoffman family in the west. They arrived by auto and report a pleasant trip full of interesting experiences and plan to spend time with relatives and friends in the area.
Miss Pearl Gladys Patton and Raymond W Glaubitz wed at St John s Catholic church in an early morning ceremony celebrated by Father George Agius. Bridesmaid Ruth Ann Patton and best man Merton G Scott attended. A wedding breakfast followed at the Patton home and a reception at the Glaubitz home near Avoca with a wedding dance that evening.
A Cass county license car tied to robberies in Atchison county was found near Rock Port Missouri on Monday. Three men fled after a county chase led by Sheriff Pitzer. the car and loot were abandoned. Authorities traced the license to a resident of Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hartford have returned from Kansas City Missouri where they stayed with their son Willis Hartford and wife. Mr Hartford who was formerly at Fort Dodge Iowa has been named the representative of the Jepsum company in Missouri city where they are now pleasantly located.
Fred Lugsch a well known dry cleaner and tailor has returned home to complete his recovery from recent appendicitis attack. He was operated on about ten days ago at a hospital in Omaha and has made wonderful progress. He plans to resume his usual activities soon.
Mother's Day observed with extensive services at the First Methodist Church. Sunday school tributes in primary and junior departments, Philathea class mothers represented by Mrs. John Elliott, large young men's class attendance with a special musical program, and the annual silent tribute of red and white flowers. Rev. C. O. Troy preached "The Faith That Moves Worlds" praising motherhood's influence on individuals and nations.
The Stull school in district 28 north of the city closed with a Sunday picnic. Miss Mary Swatek has led the school this season. Students and teacher staged a circus themed program with each child portraying animals or circus features. District ladies provided picnic dinners at noon in a pleasant setting. Town residents attended and about 200 people joined the day’s events.
Plattsmouth high school runners Stuart Porter and Albert Todd had solid showings at the state meet held at the state university. Omaha Technical, led by Skinner, won the carnival, while Genoa Indians topped group two. Chase of Wymore won the shot put with 45 feet. Porter placed third with 43 feet 10 inches. Todd took second in the javelin at 146 feet 8 inches. No other Plattsmouth entrants participated.
Plattsmouth public schools host Patrons Day to display student work across departments. R F Patterson and Miss Nordholm lead exhibits from government papers to home economics dresses, weaving, fabrics, art, posters, algebra, literature, typewriting, science notes, Indian relics, music charts, and visual arts. Visitors may tour rooms 2 to 4 Sunday, with doors open from 7 to 8:30 PM program start.
The W C T U met Monday at Mrs E J Giles home to celebrate Mothers Day with tributes to mothers, devotional on Hannah, a Mother’s Day number, and readings. Members and an in house trio provided music while Olive Gass received a token for long service. Refreshments followed the program.
Sunday afternoon the Murray Red Sox beat Four Mile Creek 6 to 4 after trailing until the last inning. Harry Newman struck out fourteen in a strong pitching effort as errors by his teammates produced the opposing runs. Several regulars were absent, weakening the Murray lineup. The Sox open the regular season next Sunday at Murray vs Goldon Oils of Omaha.
Robert Foster Patterson principal of the local high school will be commencement speaker at several western-area schools in the coming weeks. He addresses Eagle on Tuesday evening Snyder Nebraska on Thursday Burchard Monday and Summerfield Kansas on Tuesday next. This is his third year at Summerfield and second at Snyder. His address titled The Call of the Wild has received praise from listeners.
The Platters beat Nebraska City 67 to 66 at the season finale on a dirt track. standout performers included King and Kastner for Nebraska City and Porter Todd Adam Garnett and McCleary for Plattsmouth, with Libershal winning the mile on his final high school meet.
Businesses host a rooster guessing contest with no entry fee. Participants estimate kernels eaten by the rooster before Saturday evening counting. Prizes go to the closest guess, ties go to the earliest entrant, encouraging public participation.
Mr and Mrs S S Davis and children Stephen Corbin and Elizabeth with Mrs Mary M Davis from Lincoln spent Sunday at Weeping Water. They visited and were dinner guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Troy L Davis.
