The First Presbyterian Church of Plattsmouth marks its diamond jubilee with special services and large turnout. 28 new members were received this year, totaling 151 for the jubilee, as Rev. H G McClusky presides over sermons on The Jubilee Year and The Church.
Plattsmouth awoke to a thick red dust layer driven by a strong wind from a west Texas and Oklahoma dust storm. The storm spread northeast across Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, darkening streets and entering homes while merchants swept sidewalks and city crews flushed streets to remove the dirt.
The Social Workers Flower club of the city southside met at Mrs. John Kaufmann home with Mrs. James Lepert hosting. Members exchanged plants and seeds for summer garden beautification and discussed June guest day and Arbor Day aligned program. Four guests attended including Mrs Otto Pitz Mrs Arthur Chrisman Omaha Mrs Guy Wiles and Mrs James E Varga. The next meeting will be May 24 at Mrs J H Fulton home with Miss Velma Fulton as associate hostess. A two course luncheon followed.
Miss Eula Reed recently visited home with her mother Mrs. Bert Reed and brother Pat after months of treatment at Nicholas Senn hospital in Omaha. Her general breakdown followed her father’s death, and doctors hope her improving condition will allow a full return home and recovery.
Potter Hulse 18 arraigned in district court before Judge James T. Besley for aiding Elborn Covert to escape jail. He pled guilty and received a $100 fine plus costs, to be boarded out due to lack of funds. Covert remains in jail awaiting state industrial school transfer.
Relatives and friends organized a Friday evening surprise at the Meisinger residence near Weeping Water. Attendees included P. M. Meisinger Cedar Creek Anton Meisinger Max Baumeister H J Meisinger L A Meisinger Fred Guenther William Tritsch and others who enjoyed cards games and a luncheon with a birthday cake.
Improving farm at Cedar Creek finds J H McMaken and crew completing a concrete foundation for a granary to be erected at once. J D Rising plans a gorge and implement shed, undecided on concrete or frame, elements that will enhance the operation of one of the west’s best equipped farms.
A New York telephone message informs Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Sullivan that they are grandparents to a fine baby boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Merle Rainey. The child is the Rainey couple's first and a grandchild of Mrs. W. H. Rainey and Hazel Sullivan.
Ralph Olson, student at Park College in Parkville Missouri, visited his family Sunday evening. He expects to serve as an assistant in biology teaching at Park College next year. Local friends cheer his teaching success and look forward to his future.
The Plattsmouth High School senior class finishes rehearsals for Believe It or Not a new comedy directed by Mr. Figley with Mr. Jordan and Miss Beighley. Veterans like Greth Garnett Marvin Tritsch George Adam Emily Lorenz Gertrude Valiry William Wetenkamp Pauline Hoschar and Stuart Porter star alongside Laverna Rhoden Mata Schackness Alice Jeffreys Virginia Samek and Robert Hirz. A student orchestra led by Robert Hall provides music as sets and seating are arranged for Tuesday night at the Platz theatre. Reserved main floor seats 35 cents adults 35 cents students 25 cents children 25 cents balcony unreserved 25 cents.
The Plattsmouth Woman's Club closed its year with a Knights of Columbus Hall banquet decorated in purple and white. Speakers included Judge James T. Begley and Miss Helene Perry, with the club's officers installed and a report on yearly activities.
The board of education of school district No. 1 met to organize for the year and prepare for the final weeks of the term. Officers named are President Mrs. Etta Gorder, Vice-President R W Knorr, and Secretary Frank A Cloidt. City schools plan to close May 26 after the May 9 class play, May 13 Junior Senior banquet, and May 25 commencement.
Edward O. Furlong Jr of Steamboat Springs Colorado who had been at Omaha college became very ill Sunday while visiting his relatives Mr and Mrs Jack Stamp. He was rushed to Lord Lister hospital where he was operated on Monday morning. The appendix was in bad condition yet he stood the operation well and is doing as well as possible.
The Rotary club led by E. H. Spangler enjoyed a program on the steam laundry industry presented by Paul Segur of Omaha and Adams Laundry Co. including motion pictures tracing the craft from community washing to modern methods. Frank Segur and Miss Esther Dinkle performed a vocal number, with high school boys Richard Black and Bernard Knoflicek honored for May. Frank Parden of Omaha attended as a guest.
The Mynard community club held its regular meeting at the community building with a large audience. The west side committee Lawrence Leonard Mrs Henry Hild and Miss Frances Wetenkamp arranged an evening of songs piano duets a vocal duet and a musical sketch plus a talk on Mexico by Don York Jr. The program featured David Robinson and young performers Ray Bourne Richard Livingston Richard Spangler Lawrence Leonard Thelma Miller Leona Meisinger and others with varied acts and lively audience participation.
Last night a local session of the world wide bridge Olympics was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Richey with about 100,000 players in 54 nations taking part. Mrs. Richey collected scores for telegraphing to New York City while prizes were to be awarded after final checks. The event featured fine scores, refreshments, and strong enthusiasm among local bridge enthusiasts.
Tuesday's Day reports Fred Lugsch the tailor fell ill near midnight and was found to have appendicitis. He was rushed to Omaha and operated on at 2 am. He is reported to be doing well after the operation.
