The state training staff presents a diverse show at the Recreation Center featuring jewelry, plaques, buttons, trays, animal and bird displays, feather and leaf pictures, astronomy can patterns, butterflies, mounted specimens, woodwork, marionettes, and yard items. Classes and demonstrations are scheduled with guided tours for visitors.
Dr. T Bartlett of Nebraska City Cass and Otoe county recreational supervisor outlined forming a junior baseball team for ages 17 to 24 with 15 players. Six teams in the Nebraska section comprise the junior league and games will be played in summer. Sponsors Bob Wurl Fred Sharpnack and Cerl Ofe plan to support the Plattsmouth team. A tax discussion led to a committee of E J Richey Henry Soennichsen and Roy Knorr to meet the city council about tax collection and use. Henry Soennichsen led fund raising for the King Korn Karnival.
Harry McDonald from Hastings, state director for the relief program, toured the center on Friday. He praised the center as highly active and well managed with plans for a busy summer program.
William Mendenhall 61 lifelong resident near Pacific Junction and in the city died after a lengthy illness. He worked in Burlington shops and with H M Soennichsen delivering goods. Survived by six children Emma Mamie Charles Thomas Glenn and Tony LaHoda. wife and one child predeceased him. He had lived with his younger daughters since his wife’s death.
Plattsmouth residents were honored at an Ak-Sar-Ben dinner in Omaha on Wednesday evening. Sheriff Homer Sylvester and H A Schneider, Nebraska Bankers Association president, spoke as guests of honor at the Hotel Paxton. Schneider, head of the state bankers, praised Ak-Sar-Ben and Nebraska institutions for state unity and development. Sylvester was named an honorary member for the capture of two New York bank robbers in Plattsmouth. the fugitives await murder trial in Kansas City.
A. W. Norris 66 a retired farmer who lived in Elmwood and Eagle areas for over thirty years died at his Elmwood home after a Sunday stroke. Survived by widow two sons Raymond of Eagle and Watson in Illinois two daughters Norma and Mrs Aline Hermann of Lincoln two brothers Talmage York and Willem Eagle six grandchildren and many Kentucky relatives. Funeral Friday in Elmwood with Rev Baker officiating burial at Eagle.
Late Saturday the jury in the Banking Department of the State of Nebraska v Phil Hall and Veda Hall returned a verdict after over twenty four hours of deliberation. The jury awarded 250.48 to Phil L Hall and 1000 to Veda Hall. The defendants were formerly connected with the Greenwood State Bank.
The Flattsmouth Garden club schedules its fourth annual Spring Flower Show for Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23, planning to use the American Legion hall. The county wide event aims to attract Cass county flower growers with entries from Murdock Louisville Weeping Water Avoca Nehawka and other towns, with judges from Omaha or Council Bluffs and Lincoln. Prizes will be awarded by the judges, and organizers urge all yard flower growers to participate.
A group from Plattsmouth chapter F P E O traveled to Omaha for a Wednesday convention. Mrs E H Wescott led music and Mrs L S Devoe accompanied. Official delegates included Mrs Wm Baird and Mrs Roy Cole along with others from the town.
Mildred Knoflicek a Plattsmouth high school senior has accepted a violin scholarship at Peru State Teachers college to begin next fall. The standout musician won the 1936 MINE contest violin award and has earned superior ratings in multiple Peru district and state high school contests.
The April weather shows an encouraging start for farmers and gardeners with 2.23 inches of rainfall last month. Temperatures ranged from a low of 29 degrees on the 6th to a high of 76 on the 14th, with several freezing nights and mixed rainfall across the month.
A meeting at Begrles hall organized a local branch of the Brotherhood of Carmen for Burlington Refrigerator Express Co. workers. Officers named include President Edward Kohrel and Treasurer Clarence Price. The charter is expected from the AFL within a week or ten days. Some workers remain unorganized and will be canvassed for membership.
Cass county farmers are notified that the latest information on the 1937 Agricultural Conservation program will be broadcast on the National Farm and Home Hour on NBC Tuesday May 4. Administrator H. R. Tolley will discuss participation prospects for the nation with regional directors reporting progress. Claude R. Wickard will speak as north central regional head. The time is set between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. central standard time.
Mrs Breyer Ketelsen is in very serious condition at her family home on South 4th Street after weeks of illness. She suffers from a heart ailment and is under constant care. Her son William Ketelsen of Omaha has stayed nearby to assist in the past week.
Cass county farm home marks its eighth year under Harry and Mrs. Neilson with monthly per-person food clothing and maintenance costs around 12 dollars. A typical week’s menu for inmates and staff shows varied meals from oatmeal and cereal to beans and ham with milk coffee and desserts.
The Mynard Community club met Friday at the community building with community singing led by Mrs. Sherman Cole and Mrs. Elbert Wiles at the piano. A fine program followed featuring two one act plays, a pantomime movie, and piano and vocal pieces by local performers, with details of participants and organizers.
Sheriff Homer Sylvester investigated burglaries in Weeping Water and Avoca. In Weeping Water the Farmers Co operative office safe was blown but not robbed, six tires missing. In Avoca burglars damaged a gas pump at Ed Morley’s station and took fifteen gallons, and broke into John Rughe’s store and Lloyd Behrns’ grocery with unclear losses.
Police Department warns car and truck owners to properly use head lights tail lights and mufflers to avoid arrest and fines. Strict compliance required to reduce highway dangers and protect travelers.
Grand Regent Mrs. Catherine Mullen will lead the Plattsmouth delegation at the Nebraska 1957 state convention in Lincoln May 15-16. Delegates alternates and visitors from across the state will attend sessions with guests including Supreme Regent Miss Mary C. Duffy and National Director Miss Veronica O Connor. The event features a hospitality program and keynote topics on Catholic womanhood anti Communist crusade and the juniors. The order claims about 200 000 members in 2000 courts across the US Alaska Canada Cuba Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal Zone.
Robert Schleter a 22 year old of Wabash died after a brick fell from a partially dismantled church chimney striking him on the back of the head. He died soon after while awaiting medical aid. funeral arrangements have not been announced.
St. John's parish defeated Holy Rosary in the marble tournament final yesterday afternoon to win the cup for the second year. A three year run makes the cup permanent. Medals go to Ivan Smith and Billy Reddy. Albert Alitschaff and Albin Chevanee plan to compete in Lincoln Sunday with Dr. Molak.
