Senate passage of H. R. 58 misled to abolish county assessors. The bill retains an elector vote path to abolish, with clerks unpaid for duties, and removes a county clerk remuneration provision. It preserves a four year term and election petitions. governor must sign. Thirty five counties currently lack an assessor.
The Pease Style Shop expands its force with Miss Ruth Ferrie hired as clerk and to assist in the altering department. The store, a leading ladies ready to wear shop in the city, emphasizes enhanced facilities for patrons.
The Chamber of Commerce retail committee announced an essay contest on Why Should I Trade in the Town in Which I Live. Entries must be under 500 words and open March 15 to March 22 for students from public and parochial schools across four grade divisions. Prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges.
New evidence shows barter practices in Nebraska as state child welfare director Mrs. Clara Clayton compiles data for a congressional committee on poor relief. In a town of 1100, merchants accepted corn for groceries and rent, with 40000 bushels stored for later sale. Citizens paid taxes with wood while some counties allowed paying old debts with corn valued above market. Potatoes hogs and livestock were used to settle obligations and hospital bills were paid with produce, though no widespread exchange program is evident.
John Sanders junior son of Mr and Mrs John Sanders was rushed to St Catherine s hospital in Omaha for treatment after a fever followed a throat infection. He had a tonsil removal operation a week earlier. Doctors hope for a quick recovery.
Last evening at St Catherine's hospital in Omaha a ten and a half pound son was born to Mr and Mrs Hillard Grassman. The mother is reported doing nicely and the newborn will be named Donald Hillerd. The birth brings joy to the family including the brother and sister who gain a new playmate.
George J. Jeager, superintendent of the BREX loops, was in Omaha on Wednesday to consult a specialist about eye trouble. He has suffered eye problems for about a week and hopes specialist care will speed recovery and relieve the annoyance.
The Coffelt family five miles west of town celebrates the birth of a son born Sunday February 19. He weighs six and a half pounds and both mother and child are reported doing well, bringing the family much happiness.
Mr and Mrs Carl Ulrich were surprised Tuesday evening at their farm west of Mynard by neighbors who gathered to welcome them. The event featured ecards and social activities and ended with guests leaving after a pleasant housewarming.
Local contractor William Kief completed the first floor approach of the city hall. The upgrade improves vehicle and equipment movement for the fire department, streamlining access to the building.
Local merchants Fetzer Shoe Co and Ladies Torggery in Plattsmouth start a two store sale running March four to March twenty five. The campaign offers a two hundred dollar cash prize to churches or organizations based on in town and out of town votes. W K Brooks of Wichita Kansas leads campaign with Mrs Brooks assisting.
Burl Kirk of Omaha who served nine years in the Nebraska penitentiary for the murder of an Omaha police detective died in the Fort Madison Iowa prison. The body was sent to Omaha for burial. Kirk had been released Jan 12 1925 after a commutation of his twenty year sentence following a nine year fight claiming innocence. His release had been ordered and revoked and habeas corpus proceedings in 1924 failed.
The Methodist church ladies and society met Thursday afternoon in the church parlors after a business session. A delightful program followed with performances by the boys high school quartet and the girls sextette, accompanied by Miss Cora Williams. Refreshments were served by hostess Mrs Adelade Boynton the society president.
Miss Dorothy Farmer departed Thursday for Omaha where she was operated on for the removal of her tonsils. The operation occurred at the Methodist hospital and she came through in fine shape doing nicely. It is expected she will return home Saturday or Sunday.
Mrs Elizabeth Waybright 85 formerly of Plattsmouth died Tuesday at the family home 1142 West 24th Street Long Beach California. Survived by daughter Mrs Allen J Beeson of Long Beach and many nieces and nephews. Funeral at Ivy Overholtzer chapel Long Beach with Rev Ronald of the Methodist church officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery Long Beach.
Miss Olive Jones, librarian of the city library, is ill at her apartments. Miss Verna Leonard, assistant librarian, has handled book transfers and duties while Jones is absent. Jones is noted as the oldest librarian in continuous service in the United States, with more than forty years at the library.
Governor Charles W. Bryan proclaims a three day bank holiday across the state. Banks received the notice by wire as Saturday business continued in many towns. The move, now common in other states, aims to ease banking load for major centers though many businesses faced sudden disruption.
The H M Soennichsen Co stages a quilt show at its Cass county department store. It features four groups applique pieced embroidered and antique quilts. Fifty eight quilts are on display with up to one hundred expected. many heirlooms. The firm has taken out additional thousands of dollars in insurance against theft or fire risk.
Miss Leona Hudson, a Peru state teachers college student, was taken to Omaha Friday for arm treatment. She fell recently, displacing her left arm, which has not healed well. X rays were taken and dressing applied with expectation of quicker healing.
Norfolk Packing Co plans to enlarge its plant output by adding lines of vegetables to be canned. T. H. Pollock converts 160 acres east of Plattsmouth along the Missouri river bottoms for beans peas beets spinach cabbage pumpkins and sweet corn to supply the new plant. A family experienced in crop handling will assist, with residence near the pumping station while Oliver stays at the Burlington station farm. The company seeks many farmers to join in raising vegetables to keep summer production steady, offering better returns than recent grain prices.
The H. M. Seennichsen Co store redecorates its dry goods and men and shoe departments interior. F R Gobelmen and a work crew repainted in light cream to showcase stock, aligning with a quilt show bringing bright colors to the display.
A man named Henry Fornoff Pf. declares a rumor of a car leaving Herman Leutchens farm on October 21, 1922 is false. He asserts he can prove his location that night and asks people to mind their own business.
Farmers start busy spring work as fields are cleared and the farming season opens. Many relocate within the county this year and farm sales are numerous as farmers close out or seek new locations.
The Plattsmouth high school basketball team completed the 1932-23 season without a defeat, holding Saunders County champions to a 26 to 24 win over Wahoo. Key players include Rummel, Porter, Arn, McCleary, Hirz, and Kellzroen, with strong third-quarter offense securing the victory.
The United Merchants Association of Iowa Nebraska Kansas and Missouri elected R. W. Knorr as president and Carl Panzer of Ashland as secretary treasurer after their annual meeting in Omaha. Knorr will continue as president for another year.
