Child Dies in Waters of Platte River Sunday
Earnest Ponce, seven, drowned in the Platte River while swimming with his family at a park outing in Omaha. His father, Frank Ponec, a city firefighter, saved three others before the boy vanished in a swift deep hole. Edwin and Ernest Ponec, ages nine and seven, were swept away as the father fought to rescue them. Dorothy Ponec, eleven, and Fred Kimpnick were also present but not harmed. The father perished in the attempt to save Ernest.
