Continental Gas and Electric plans consolidation across Nebraska towns
The Nebraska Lighting Company HE plant was sold in January 1913 to Abbott and Eaton for Continental Gas and Electric of Cleveland. Since April 1913 Plattsmouth has seen major improvements as part of a drive to connect all western plants by transmission lines. Continental owns York Gas and Electric and other western Iowa properties with 109 miles of lines from Red Oak. They aim to build another Plattsmouth plant and expand west, but fear foreign competition may block franchises. The city could suffer if rival firms operate separately, as two telephone networks showed. The company argues one efficient system suffices with fair rates. The McKinney company faces claims of pressuring Plattsmouth for tribute to a Traction Czar in Champaign Illinois.
