A Friday concert by the Burlington band drew 800 to 1,000 residents to the High school grounds. Director Schulhof led a popular program including As Long as the Shamrock Grows Green and Way Down South. The crowd praised the new amphitheater site and many audience members noted the performance by the band.
Dan Rice left for Glenwood after a message announced John Brandon, his son-in-law, suffered a sunstroke while hauling hay yesterday. Brandon was driving a wagon when he collapsed on the road in an unconscious condition and is in serious condition.
A young woman visiting George Adams at Pacific Junction was bitten by a snake while exiting a pond. A local doctor rushed to treat her as investigators suspected a rattlesnake bite. The frightened victim could recall few details of the incident.
Plattsmouth announces a special teachers' examination to be held at the office of the County Superintendent on Thursday July 24 and Friday July 26 1943 Pleading Circle questions will be given Friday July 25 The dates were adjusted from Friday and Saturday as previously listed Mary B Foster County Superintendent

F. H. Speck, Republican ad man, set a record by typesetting five and a half galleys in nine and a half hours on a hot Monday. About 24 700 single type pieces were handled at roughly 2 285 per hour, a pace well above normal seven to eight hours. Speck, formerly with the Journal, is praised as a first class printer.
Frank Peckaneo a Bohemian on the Missouri Pacific section gang suffered two fingers mashed on his right hand while lifting a rail at Oreapolis. He was taken to the company doctor for dressing and comfort.
This noon Norris Smith was playing at Judge H. D. Travis’s residence when a porch column collapsed on him. He suffered a badly cut left hand, leg and facial scratches, bleeding heavily. He was taken first to his parents’ home, then to Dr. Cummins’ office, where wounds were dressed and he received care.
The ice cream social on the lawn of the St Pauls Evangelical Church last evening drew several hundred attendees and raised a neat sum. The Aid Society, in charge, reports a delightful social and financial success amid lantern decorations and pleasant lawn ambiance.

Frank Hawkenberry, a Burlington blacksmith shop employee, injured his right foot Thursday when a heavy iron bar dropped on it. He traveled downtown today on crutches, expressing frustration at needing to use them as he recovers over several days.

The community mourns Mrs. Cornelius Bengen Jr of Mynard who died after a four day illness. The 73 year old immigrant from Germany had lived in Nebraska since 1879 with husband Cornelis Bengen Sr. Survived by children Jacob Cornelius Mrs George Mrs Tom Toby and Mrs John Stone. Funeral 2 PM from the Mynard home, burial at Nebern cemetery beside her husband.
Mrs A W Weeks hosted a stylish gathering at her home in honor of Mrs F G Hanson of Ogden Utah who has been her guest for weeks Japanese lanterns lit the lawn as relatives and friends enjoyed high five and social talk refreshments were served by Misses Helen Egenberger and Hermie Spies Hanson plans a trip to Omaha then Grand Island before returning to Ogden, Utah
The appearance of Dr Bachmann on the street with a broad smile drew comment, as he is the proud father of twin boys born yesterday morning at Palmer Nebraska. Mrs Bachmann is visiting her parents there and both mother and babies are reported to be doing well.
