Sheriff Quinton and Chief Fitzgerald raided the bum shack early this morning. They arrested three tramps for vagrancy, sending them to ten days in jail after plea of guilty. The trio were linked to a scare at Soennichsen's store when two men tried to flee from the cash drawer. Names given as Thos McGlenn Frank Smith and Wm Moore.
The Ashland Telephone company uses an information ring to broadcast morning weather forecasts and evening events and sales over party lines. Farmers gain from stock care updates and notices of sales and public meetings, as subscribers rush to the phone when the ring sounds.
A Sunday afternoon blaze in Ashland caused about 10000 in damage. The Ashland Journal building and a butcher shop were destroyed, the Commercial hotel narrowly saved by volunteer firefighters in freezing weather. No insurance covered the structures or contents. The Journal vows to publish as usual.
Sallie Dennis Greenslate, a Cass County pioneer born January 12, 1815 in Otsego New York, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. C D Clapp in Elmwood after a long life of migration from New York to Iowa and finally to Nebraska. Funeral services were held at the Christian church conducted by Elder J B White with interment in Elmwood cemetery. She married Herman Greenslate on June 1 1833 and had six children three of whom survived.
Hugh Murphy closed a deal with C. C. and T. E. Parmele for the old W. H. B. Stout stone quarry at the east edge of town. He will open it at once, employ about 100 men, and strip 55 000 dollars worth of ground this spring. The building will be torn down due to blasting hazards.
The Lincoln Journal notes a stone bluff overlooking the Platte near Louisville where W. H. B. Stout operated quarries for major city buildings. He built a stone house to recruit convict labor but a bill failed by one vote and the house later served quarry workers. In 1893 Stout moved to Washington to furnish granite for a library contract, which was cancelled leaving a $60,000 dispute.
Records of County Register A. Schneider show in January sixteen mortgages filed and twenty one releases on farm property while eight mortgages filed and eleven releases on city property. Amounts listed under farm property and releases are noted.
Frank Schlater of Cass County reports prosperity in Plattsmouth. He says the county treasury will redeem 10 000 in court house bonds leaving 5 000 outstanding with 10 000 cash in the sinking fund. He praises county officers and hints at a possible bid for county treasurer by party nomination.
A local shopper was persuaded to buy a small article for 3.50 by a non advertiser claiming a near cost price due to lack of advertising. He later found wholesale cost was 75c each, about 9 per dozen, exposing a 2.75 profit hidden in the sales claim and accusing the merchant of exploiting town newspaper support.
A historical note recalls a 1720 New England snowstorm with drifts to second story windows, a severe 1133 Italian winter with frozen wine and bursting trees, and a two month Thames freeze. It also mentions the 1797 Quito quake that killed about 40,000 and warns of expected bad weather this month urging coal storage.
R W King, formerly with King Dry Goods of Wyoming Illinois now arriving to assume full management of Mr Coates store. He is described as an accomplished businessman who understands every branch of the trade.
Three engines shipped from local shops to the Great Northern road to meet heavy motive power demand. A rush order from Chicago last week caused workers to log four extra hours daily until completion.
A satirical tale describes creation then a series of figures: a man who does not believe in advertising, a man who does not take the paper, and a stubborn subscriber who refuses to pay. The piece ends with the postmaster marking the paper as refused.
A county attorney was informed this afternoon that Ashland officers detained a man accused of stealing and butchering a hog belonging to J. Hartfield of Cass County near Ashland. Sheriff Quinton rushed to Ashland and planned to bring the prisoner back this evening.

A Spirit Lake report to the Marshalltown Times Republican says Will Crabtree and Patrick Woods were attacked and eaten by wolves while viewing land in Canada. A third party with them escaped wounded. Crabtree, brother of H. A. Crabtree, had been living near Montgomery and left with personal effects for Canada over a month ago. Local acquaintance BE Louck knew the Crabtrees and mourns the untimely death.
Elmwood Park association signed a contract for a Chautauqua to run August 10 to 18 at the park. The program features Senator J P Dolliver Congressman J Adam Bede and Author Read among speakers with strong concert companies. Noted divines will attend Sunday services.
Word reached Nebraska City of the marriage of John Ewing and Florence Thompson at the bride’s sister home in Minneapolis yesterday. Both formerly lived in Nebraska City where Ewing managed the local telephone company and Thompson was head operator in the same exchange. They left about a year ago for positions with the Minneapolis company. Florence was born and raised in Nebraska City, and John resided there many years.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Sullivan died Sunday afternoon at 3 30 from congestion of the brain. The funeral will be held at the family residence at 1 o'clock tomorrow with interment in Horning cemetery.
County commissioners awarded contracts for year 1907 including county physicians by district to J B Martin A E Walker J W Brendel J M Greene N D Talcott and J C Munger. Burial of pauper dead let to L R Upton Union. County printing secured by F E Bricka Weeping Water Republican.
A Elmwood school report states Mrs. Nettie Turner of the grammar department has been compelled to cease work due to illness and has returned to Union. High school students are temporarily filling the vacancy by rotation.
Special from Council Bluffs recounts the life of Daniel A. Farrell editor of the Comeil Bluffs Daily Globe 1888 1889 later sheriff who captured the desperado Polk Wells alone in a Wisconsin encounter Wells was captured and jailed at Fort Madison Farrell died in San Antonio Texas after moving through several ventures including mining and publishing He was about sixty survived by a wife two sons and a daughter and was remembered for his daring act and social ties to Plattsmouth.

Burlington train No 19 arrived on time at 7 35 am marking the first on schedule since January 6 1907. Peck s Bad Boy troupe of Peck s Theatre failed to catch the train but some reached the depot in time to see the last coach. The company moved on by noon Missouri Pacific to Omaha and then Blair for tonight s show.
H. Z. Clark at the Burlington planing mill had his left hand caught in an augur drill. Tendons were severed and flesh mangled, but no bones were broken. He was treated by the company physician and will need several days off work.
