Winter weather will curtail highway projects under the civic works administration and push for new lines of work to use labor hours. Work on leveling parkways along Highway No. 75 will pause until warmer weather, freeing funds for other tasks. The city seeks funds to fix up city property, notably the decayed McVey residence on North Sixth Street, and paving and sewer repair projects could be extended with state committee approval.

Skating Pond Opens On South Chicago Avenue

The Civil Works Administration payroll in Nebraska for the week ending Dec 21 shows 27 815 men on thirty hour jobs and 348 on civil works or white collar work, totaling 28 162 workers who earned 331 023.61 dollars. Miss Olive Gass hosts her cousin C D Wintersteen of Minneapolis who arrived Thursday to spend time with relatives. A ninety year old veteran of the Civil War, he recalls the great struggle and belongs to one of the Northland army’s last survivors. He is a nephew of the late Dr William Wintersteen, pioneer resident after whom part of the city is named.

Henry Wulf, longtime Avoca resident and Cas County pioneer, died at home after a long illness. He leaves his wife, two sons Will and Edward of Avoca, two daughters Mrs Dora Hild of Murray and Mrs Fret Hansen of Nehawka, and a host of relatives.
