Christmas in Plattsmouth centered on church services and family gatherings. Large crowds attended midnight Mass at St John’s and Holy Rosary, with 400 parishioners at St John’s communion. St Paul Evangelical held a prominent pageant, and Rev O G Wichmann led the 10 o'clock Christmas sermon.
A large Lewiston audience filled the new 16 by 20 foot stage Tuesday evening December 16 for a community program. The program featured piano numbers by Mrs Will Minford and performances by J A Lancaster and Bob Connolly plus readings by Mrs Joe Shera and a pupil program led by Miss Louise Rummel. Geraldine Luddith Alex Campbell Jr and others performed with classical pieces and a tap routine by Geo Brown and Joe Herring.
On December 26, 1877, in Denison Iowa, Miss Jennie Marshall and A W Smith wed. Friday notes their fifty third anniversary at the Smith home. Married by Rev Savage of Denison Methodist Church, the couple has lived in the city 21 years and are highly respected. They have nine children, five deceased, with Mrs Grace Simpson Ausley Nebraska Arthur Smith Carson Iowa Fred Smith Ashland and Mrs Mate Boroff Red Oak Iowa among survivors.
The Klema and Martis families thank friends in Plattsmouth and Omaha for acts of kindness words of sympathy and participation in the funeral of their father Father J Hancik served in the Holy Rosary Church and for flowers This care will be a cherished memory from Louis Klema and Family Joe Martis and Family.

A Christmas noon dinner brought together the Egenberger family. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Henry Egenberger and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Carter and daughter of Omaha, L. W. Egenberger and wife, Stuart Egenberger, and Mrs. John Bauer, Sr. of this city.
Mrs. Helen Pesak aged twenty seven, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Pilney Sr., died Wednesday evening in Omaha after weeks of illness. Born in this city and long in poor health, she underwent several operations without relief. She is survived by her husband, her parents, two brothers Otto and Vincent Pilney of Omaha, and sister Grace Pilney of this city. The family and community extend sympathy.
Ned C. Abbott superintendent of the state School for the Blind at Nebraska City was in the city for a brief visit. Abbott came to town twenty years ago as Plattsmouth superintendent and has maintained friendships since. He and Mrs. Abbott and daughter Annabel spent Christmas in Omaha at Harvey E. Newbranch’s home with family members and guests.
Mrs Catherine Perry longtime Cass county resident celebrated a birthday December 3 in Alhambra California at daughter Mrs S G Andland home. Nine birthday cakes and many letters and ecards arrived from relatives especially Nebraska. Her California sons read messages aloud as refreshments with pink and white ice cream were served. She will spend Christmas with son Walter Perry in Orange.
The St Pauls Sunday school members led by Miss Margaret Engelkemeier visited various city sections singing Christmas carols. A large group accompanied by several city school teachers enjoyed breakfast at the church parlors and then attended early church services.
On Friday afternoon Miss Virginia Jordan of Lincoln and Joseph R. Thompson of Long Pine Nebraska were joined in marriage by Father Marceles Agius of St. John's Catholic Church at his residence. The newlyweds returned to their home after the ceremony.
Montgomery mourns the death of Andrew A. Fudge a Montgomery hardware merchant at his Fifth Avenue home. Born 1867 in Covington Virginia he lived in Kansas and Nebraska before settling in Montgomery in 1916. He built the Fudge Hardware business and was famed for generosity friendships and community service including honorary Rotary membership. Survived by widow two daughters Ruth Dulaney and Anna Marie Sterrett and son Robert J. Jr. Burial in Covington Virginia with Elks services aligns with Calvary Episcopal ties.
The obituary lists two brothers and two sisters among survivors: Charles A. Fudge of Covington Virginia. A D Fudge of Princeton West Virginia. Mrs. Mary E. Guildin and Mrs. Virginia Strauss of Arizona.
Christmas day gathering at the Rummel residence featured relatives and friends. Attendees included Christina Rumel grandmother, William Rummel family with Louise and Robert, Guy Heil, Edward Rummel, G H Black, Lester Anderson of Omaha, Clyde Graves, and Jesse Tower.
Mrs. Fred Kehne a 69 year old longtime Cass County resident died after a prolonged illness. Born Margaret Horn in Peoria she married Fred Kehne on March 4 1886 and lived on a farm before moving to the city with her husband. Survived by his husband five children two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at several members homes sharing reports including sick members. Librarian noted two Aaron Burr biography volumes funded by the society for the public library. Delegates for the district convention in Nebraska City were elected. A memorial service honored Emma Miller who died December 13. Refreshments followed.
The north city home of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Richey displays rich holiday decor. Red glowing candles illuminate each window and Christmas trees on the north porch welcome guests, marking a festive season in the neighborhood.
Mr and Mrs Charles Vitousek hosted a large group of relatives and friends on Christmas day at their West Main street home. A splendid dinner and visiting occupied the time of the party. Guests included Mr and Mrs James Nowacek and family Miss Sophia Chaloupka Mr and Mrs Joe Hiber and son and Mr and Mrs Pat Egan and family of Omaha.
The Plattemouth fire department will hold its annual New Year’s Eve ball on December 31 at the American Legion community building. Proceeds support the volunteer department and other worthy causes, with tickets selling to aid the treasury and community safety.
The Mynard Community club and Sunday school held Christmas exercises in a decorated hall with an electric tree. A chorus performed Silent Night and Joy to the World, Miss Shogren read What Think Ye of Christ, Miss Vallery sang with pantomime by Miss Livingston, and Santa handed out candy bags to children and select older attendees.
Mr and Mrs Will T Adams hosted a Christmas family gathering at their home with members including Mr and Mrs J E Adams and family of Omaha and Mr and Mrs Harry Nielsen and their family. A fine dinner accompanied the holiday visit and time spent with relatives.
Funeral services for Anton Kra jecek were held Monday morning at the farm home south of the city en route to Holy Rosary church. Rev. J. Hancik conducted the rites and offered comfort to relatives from Omaha Council Bluffs and local friends. Interment followed at South Omaha cemetery.
Deputy Rex Young arrested Clare Kellogg who was wanted in Oshkosh Nebraska for forgery. Kellogg was jailed to await Sheriff Smith from Gardan County who will return him to the west part of the state to face the charge.
Mr and Mrs W A Heinemann of Columbus visited in the city at the home of Dr and Mrs Heinemann. The trip included parents of Dr P T Heinemann and Mr and Mrs J R Frauson of Geneva Nebraska as holiday guests.
A family Christmas Eve gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Noble featured a Christmas tree for children and a Christmas day dinner. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wiles, Everett Noble and children Richard and Jimmie of Omaha, Evan Noble of Cheyenne, Wyoming and his daughter Loretta, Mr. and Mrs. Joe McMahen and son Joe JIL, Joe Noble, Bobbie Beal, and the Nobles.
Across Cass county on Friday hunters organized drives from the Missouri river toward Mur dock. In Murray area more than 200 men participated and two wolves were killed. A parallel hunt near Murdock rounded up several wolves, reducing pet and fowl losses. Farmers report frequent wolf and coyote presence causing damage to crops and stock.
Secretary Hyde announced that pure refined corn sugar need not be labeled in foods. He argued the change would boost corn sugar consumption, expand the industry, and remove an old discriminatory rule. He cited a potential market of 5 to 100 million bushels annually and noted corn sugar’s similarity and advantages to cane sugar.
G Agabekoff testifies before the House Communist Investigating Committee that Soviet agents travel with American passports to enter countries and conduct operations. He cites a Moscow office producing forged documents and a cache of English and American papers used by the secret police.
From Fridays Datly report Mrs D A Young, ill at her daughter Mrs Guy C White's home, shows slight improvement though still bedridden. Hope she regains use of her limbs and her former health.
In Bates Book Store shoppers find a full Dennison line of crepe paper novelties and party favors, with every shade available for seasonal decorations and celebrations.
The Associated Charities group led by W. G. Kieck and Mrs. C. A. Rosencrans raised cash gifts totaling 153.15 for baskets and toys. Seventy two baskets were prepared plus ten designated family meals funded by private donors, with funds used for baskets shoes and other needs. Local citizens contributed clothing fruit and vegetables at the library to aid the needy. Dr O Sandin and volunteers oversaw distribution with J H McMaken supplying a truck and help from Fred McMaken.
Omaha driver Doxey will be charged with causing death while exceeding the speed limit and reckless driving while under the influence after his car overturned on a gravel turn, killing Edith Glade. The Christmas party afterride left Glade pinned beneath the car, died at the scene. Doxey and passengers were returning home.
Mrs Henry L Doherty of New York hosts Helen Lee Eames Doherty debut as crowds gather for a lavish Washington season event. She downplays artistic fame noting her daughter is still an amateur. Attendees include Vice President, Mr and Mrs Edward Everett Gann, Secretary of War and Mrs Hurley, Ambassadors, ministers, and lawmakers amid heavy rain.
