A visit to Elmwood highlights its merchants and civic spirit as Cass county's first chautauqua gets under way. Local leaders Langhorst Dittman Starks and Clark back a park filled event with ample accommodations and park grounds. Plattsmouth is urged to send delegates for multiple days to support the gathering.
A Cass county tour notes Alvo’s thriving shops, bank led by S. C. Boyles, metalwork by A. J. Baird, and early pioneers C. R. Jordan and A. F. Skiles. It praises Langhorst and Ruge in Murdock, H. E. McDonald’s drug store, and Union State Bank led by P. S. Crink. The writers commend local roads, cement sidewalks, and residents like Milt Moore and William Law, with travels via Rock Island railroad through Cass County towns.
On Wednesday we toured Elmwood residences and the chautauqua park to be used starting Saturday. The principal pavilion seats 3 000 and a dining hall serves 100, with underground cold water pipes from Charley Clopp’s land. No tears will be allowed on the chautauqua.
The Journal reports a first visit to Murdock Nebraska a thriving town on the C R I & Pacific railway. It notes well-to-do farmers and up-to-date mercantile houses including Martin Tool & Co a large store offering dry goods clothing shoes and groceries led by Geo A Leis and Mr Tool praised as thorough business people.
The narrator describes a brief stop in Bend staying overnight and touring the village business district with one store one hotel and one saloon. They thank Jerry McHugh for his help and note M. S. Zaar and S. Long as respected locals and Hansen the saloon keeper as orderly and law abiding.
The exhibit car was taken to Omaha on Thursday for dressing and travel to the east where western products will be shown. John Weyrick and K Barakram from local shops went to Omaha to make slight alterations to better display some exhibits that could not be shown to best advantage when first sent.
Last Saturday evening H. D. Barr filed his intention to seek the position of justice of the peace for Plattsmouth precinct. The filing is subject to ratification by voters at the primary on September 3.
Henry E Spangler died at his home south of town after a month of acute bladder inflammation. Born in Lancaster County Pennsylvania in 1835 he lived near Plattsmouth for years and left eleven children, ten living. Funeral services were conducted at the United Brethren Church with interment in Eikenberry Cemetery.
A letter from Hon. H. D. Travis of Plattsmouth sent to E. D. Marnell states he will enter the race for district judge on the democratic ticket. Travis is described as a strong, clean, conservative attorney and a leading figure in Cass and Otoe counties. The News endorses his candidacy, urging voters to elect one of the best fitted men for the bench.
The state committee of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska Masons met at the Masonic Home to decide the addition location funded by a 320000 appropriation. Plans call for building eighty feet eastward from the north end, then another eighty later, forming a court for the chapel. George W. Lininger’s $5000 bequest supports the chapel, with Mrs Lininger present to review the use of the funds.
A card from Mrs. Salsbury's bedside, via her son Rev. Salsbury, states the elderly patient has been failing since last Saturday. The warm weather and long illness create a difficult complication, and the family hopes for the best though convulsions may occur, which would be cause for thanks if resolved.
Mr and Mrs Isaac Wiles suffered a serious runaway while returning from Nicholas Todd s funeral. A bee sting or insect bite caused their gentle horse to bolt on a hill, sending the buggy to pieces and throwing them to the roadside. Mr Wiles suffered a forehead wound needing two stitches and both adults were bruised but fortunate not to be more seriously hurt.
Miss Mary E. Foster filed her intention to run for county superintendent subject to Democratic primary ratification on September 4. She is described as highly qualified and well suited for the role, with strong school experience and training supporting her candidacy.
Division Freight Agent J J Cox reports August 2 crop conditions across eastern Nebraska. Wheat yield fair, oats light, potatoes excellent quality but small yield. Rain has improved conditions. corn tasseling with ears forming and general prospects good. alfalfa and pastures thriving, fruit limited to late apples.
