Veto Debate Over Budget Cap and Tax Cut Passes Senate

The Senate rejected Ford's 395 billion spending ceiling 66 to 27 and approved a 6.3 billion tax cut bill 73 to 19. The only amendment added was Hartke's six month extension of a 5 percent housing tax credit. Efforts for a compromise failed as Democrats refused to tie cuts to tax cuts and Ford rejected dollar for dollar language.

Rape Attempt Reported in Plano Was Found Unfounded

Plano police investigated a weekend report of an alleged rape but cleared the case as unfounded after further inquiry. A department spokesman said a woman reported the attack occurred late Saturday night in the area.

County approves backhoe purchase and janitorial contract

In a Monday session the Collin County Commissioners Court bought a used backhoe from Trinity Equipment Co of Dallas for 7000 dollars for Precinct 2 and awarded janitorial services to Otis Wilder Janitorial Service Co of Farmersville for the School Superintendent's office at 30 dollars monthly. The meeting also covered road work approvals, staff changes, and a large list of local incidents and accidents reported over the weekend.

FBI arrests Houston forgery suspect in Oklahoma City

FBI agents arrested 29 year old James Leon Robinson on a federal warrant issued December 9 charging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The case stems from a Houston forgery investigation and was announced by Special Agent in Charge Kenneth Whittaker.

House approves broad energy bill to lower prices

The House passed a 236 to 160 vote on a 40 month energy program aimed at forcing energy prices down at the outset. The measure could be vetoed and awaits Senate action after conference committee changes. Pricing implications remain uncertain for retail consumers.

Fire Department Reports Five Blazes This Weekend

Firefighters extinguished five blazes over a four day period including four grass fires and a tree fire near Belleview Apartments sparked by a downed electrical wire at 9 25 p m Saturday. Grass fires occurred at Raintree Ridgewood Friday Bridgeway Farms Sunday Forman Elementary Monday Willowcreek Park Jupiter. The department also assisted two homeowners locked out, conducted one smoke investigation, answered an automatic alarm at Barron Elementary and made 16 ambulance runs.
