The city finance committee reported a modest budget rise for 1918, with total revenues and expenditures outlined. The council adjourned to review the detailed 1918 budget including police, streets, libraries, and city hall costs, with several routine authorizations and postings for department projects and pensions.
About 100 members of the Hiesbeth TAB Society met in Plainfield invited by T A B. The Elizabethans traveled on Low Jersey Central trains and attended Fourth Street hall events with music dancing and bowling. Eddie Marks orchestra provided dancing while Elizabeth band played. The event drew a large crowd and featured a bowling series won by the Elizabeth team. A return visit to Elizabeth was planned for February 7.
The event honors William McClinton of Prad Place Ontario on his formal sendoff. About twenty five guests gathered for hours of dancing and games with supper served. Mr McClinton received a wristwatch from his mother Mrs A Allard before leaving for Fort Bio then Ari Toni a in the near future.
Former District Court Judge William Newcorn states that the Court of Common Pleas should appoint a judge with long practice and experience in New Jersey courts. He opposes Senator Carlton B. Pierce's nomination, arguing lack of essential qualifications and urging Governor Hughes to reconsider before finalizing the selection.
Charles A Hierins of the machinery firm 10 & Co. A. Higgs was reappointed by Tedee Temes Connolly for a three year term in the Westfield plant. The ceremony will be at the firm offices on West Port Street Mercingsvenne. The reassignment references field tasks in LateniMer Rahway and nearby districts with no changes to the broader group.
The Pythian Lodge No. 74 in Castle Mall Ten Babcock building prepares for a gala meeting with candidates to receive the third degree. Campaigns for new members and reorganization continue as plans for entertainment and a farewell to the losers are proposed for the event.
Knights of Unity Lodge No. 102 held a roll call and installation ceremony last night at Castle Hall. Officers and members were installed. Frank Putnam of East Second Street was reappointed treasurer for the twentieth year, with several new officers named and a large crowd in attendance.
A large Plainfield gathering backed a Knights of Columbus effort to raise 10 million for war camp needs. Senator William Runyon chaired and urged quick local contributions of 25 000, with 400 campaign workers to cover nineteen districts plus suburbs. The drive starts tomorrow and runs a week, with committees named to oversee finance and operations.
W. R. Codington chairman of the Joral Board reports a ruling from the District Board that a registrant may appeal to the Joral Board only if the board has not granted deferment or classifications other than industrial or agricultural. An anniversary mass at St Marys Church honors James J Strappe, longtime Plainfield resident, who died January 19 1917. Rev Father P J M Bogan led the service with many relatives present.
The promotion of Lieutenant-Colonel William B. Martin to command the 104th training unit is hailed in Plainfield. As a veteran of Company K, Plainfield’s military circles note his long service, national matches, and selection for America’s team in England.
Reading as of noon today, many merchants and businesses in the city did not fully follow Commissioner Garfield’s five day closing order. Some industries such as the Standard Airplane and Scott Press Works operated as usual, while Pond Tool Works planned a shut down until next Wednesday.
John L. Ednan, Newark school manual trainer and former Plainfield resident, helped Leon Trotsky return to Russia in the early 1910s with funds raised by mutual friends. Hogan recalls Trotsky thanked benefactors and hinted at future influence, while noting his own concern about offering American aid.
Kath Tartter of Newburgh New York becomes the first woman yeoman in Plainfield, assigned to a Scott Field facility making aircraft engines. She wears a modified uniform and skirt, earning pay and duties similar to male counterparts. Tartter says women will aid the war effort and expresses readiness for transport or base duties in France if needed.
