Three damage suits arising from an automobile accident on Springfield Avenue Geotch Plains filed during the current Supreme Court term in Elizabeth begin January 25. Plaintiffs include Thomas Wade seeking damages for Hilda Hodgson's death and others appealing for injuries. Defendant is Rowland Depew, driver of the car, with O Raymond Lyons and William Codington assisting as counsel in Newark and this city. The crash occurred on a Sunday night when Hodgson Perrine and another girl were walking from church. Depew reportedly struck them from the rear and fled, then stood trial before Judge Connolly and was released on bail. Acting Adjutant General Olikyeon cited Patriotism by Thomas P. Gallagher of Bart and others in aiding recruits who faced arrival at Raritan without a military station. Lieutenant Leonard from Somerville coordinated actions as War Department shifted recruits to Camp Upton, while draft boards were told to halt inductions at Raritan. Somerset county town near Senator Preling would host supplies for soldiers and blankets from Somerville Armory to the Prial Armory.
Mrs. Elizabeth MacConnell widow of Thomas MacConnell died at her daughter's home on West Third Street after a long illness. A native of Scotland she lived in Plainfield over thirty years and was a member of Hope Mechanical Chapel. She leaves two daughters and three sons including Andrew of West Third Street Newark, MacConnell of Newark, and James MacConnell who resides in the West. Funeral services are set for 2 o clock at the home with Rev D Woy Teerer officiating and private interment to follow.
