The fuel administrator issues drastic action ordering all coal and coke contracts to include a request or order from the Federal Administrator. Deliveries under these contracts are to be requisitioned by the government, with all costs redirected accordingly, and enforced under this order effective December 24.
Reported discussion on the likely makeup of President Francis J. Mists councilmanic committees to be announced at the reorganize New Year’s night meeting. Names debated include Graven, Case, Imiark, and others with potential chairmanship shifts across fire, street, finance, police panels.
Judge James C. Connolly presided at a naturalization service in the Octater term session yesterday. He administered the oath of allegiance to new citizens from Europe and elsewhere, praising duties to the nation and the honor of adopting the United States. The judge urged commitment to civic responsibilities amid wartime patriotism and welcomed newcomers on their path to dignity and success.

Mrs Olive Moore Swody, wife of Prank Swody, died yesterday morning at her home 11 Grandview Avenue. She was a young woman recently in North Plainfield with a wide local acquaintance. She leaves her husband and a two and a half year old daughter, plus her mother and brother in Elizabeth and another brother in Harrisburg, Pa. The funeral will be held at the late home Monday at 2 p.m., Rev Strong in charge, burial in Hillside cemetery. Also notes of holiday visit by Mine Hane Hodge and discharges from Camp Dix of Plainfield selectives.

Middlesex County officials consider a 45000 appropriation to upgrade sewer beds at the new disposal facility. Engineer George Fuller cites excessive solids in tanks creating obnoxious gases and outlines piping changes, sludge beds, pumping facilities, gas vent lines, and sludge handling improvements. Plainfield would bear about seventy percent of the cost if approved.
Selected men at Camp Dix who missed Christmas leaves will be off duty tomorrow afternoon and report back next Wednesday night. The policy shift raised hope as later orders boosted leave to nearly two thirds of each company, with many Plainfield soldiers staying local due to distance. Several privates and two lieutenants, including J. M. Charies and A Phillips, were in town for the holiday.
Ming Grace Baker daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Baker of West Front street married Thomas J Mealy formerly of Buffalo N Y. The ceremony was in New York City last Saturday with only witnesses. They will live in Brooklyn where Healy works at Standard Aero Cornell. Healy came to Plainfield from Curtis Aeroplane Works in Buffalo to be chief inspector and later moved to Brooklyn.
United States railroads will be taken over by the government at noon for the duration of the war. William G. McAdoo becomes director general of railroads with power to unify and supervise traffic, equipment, terminals, and trackage. He will form a staff of experts to oversee operations and ensure efficient movement of freight, while reconciling reimbursements to roads after the holiday recess. Officials anticipate faster traffic, reduced congestion, and new terminal access in major cities, including Baltimore and Ohio lines into New York’s Pennsylvania Station.
Union County fuel administrator John K English attends a dinner with State Fuel Administrator Richard Jenkinson to discuss enforcing the dimmer order. The Wednesday night and Sunday night lighting curbs affect Plainfield and the county as the war conservation plan tightens. Jenkinson’s letter warns of penalties for noncompliance and outlines temporary powers to close public spaces if needed. Thomas W Morgan, former resident, dies in New York and will be buried in Plainfield after services conducted by Rev Dr Philip R Strome.
