In 1831 the Samson and Sarah Traylor family with two children journey from Mergennes Vermont by wagon toward Illinois. They meet immigrants at Niagara Falls including John McNeil and join a party heading to the Sangamon country. They suffer fever and ague. Sarah nurses Harry Needles. Arriving at New Salem they are welcomed by Abe Lincoln and begin life there with friends Jack Kelso and his daughter Bim. John McNeil joins the group.
