Patriotic Program Marks Indiana Boys School Event

A splendid patriotic program was presented at the Indiana Boys School on Monday the Fourth. Hon. John T. Hume of Denville delivered an address that was well received by the students. Music and other features complemented the event. A baseball game between two school teams was also played on the campus diamond.

First Union Church Summer Service Held at Christian Church

The first of the summer union services was conducted at the Christian church. Music was directed by K Edward McKinney with Olive Sea man singing. Tomato Race Tangles Rushton Cumberworth Inman

The Rushton Cumberworth Inman ripe tomato contest drew more interest than the Carpentier Dempsey bout. Winners remain withheld as contestants settle disputes. Rushton illness and a July 1 tomato affect records while outsiders may have won. Sweet corn also noted with Delbert and Mrs Vaughn reporting new garden ears.

Record Heat Waves Sweep Four Days Across City

The past five days were the hottest of the summer with temperatures from 95 to 105 degrees. A reliable thermometer shows mercury around 98 during the peak heat on Sunday through Wednesday.

Boon for Farmers Distributes Picric Acid to Farmers

More than 12 million pounds of picric acid surplus from war stock will be given to farmers for agricultural uses. The Bureau of Public Roads will distribute it, with farmers paying only freight and 6 cents per pound to cartridge placement. The stock is stored in Sparta Wisconsin and Wingate New York and will be used for stump and rock blasting and land breaking on farms.

Purdue Alumni Resolve to Support University Against Criticism

At a Hendricks county meeting in Danville, the Purdue Alumni Association adopted six resolutions defending Purdue University against recent criticism in the Danville Republican. The group pledges to oppose damaging remarks, promote education, and recognize Purdue Extension and federal funding. Revolutionary Conscience First for Children In Bolshevist Schools

Captain Marion C. Cooper, a former prisoner of war, says in Riga that Bolshevist schools teach a child to develop a revolutionary conscience first and that propaganda aims to convert adults as well. He notes children visiting anti Bolshevist parents and describes repatriation polishing Polish prisoners before return. He reports overall poor prison diet but no personal mistreatment.

Picnics At Rainbowridge Arm Honor Eastern Star Members

The Plainfield Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star hosted a country picnic at Rainbowridge Arm the Jessups home north of town. About seventy five guests enjoyed a generous supper with salads chicken meat loaves sandwiches ice cream and cake. Miss Pansy Norton county home demonstrator will depart soon after three years of service to the Sugar Grove and Union Home Economics Clubs and county homemaking efforts.

Union Home Economics Class Picnic Supports County Demonstrator

Thirty six members and children gathered at Mrs. Veil Stanley’s home for an all day meeting and picnic. A chicken dinner followed by a program featured a table talk on a debate about the literary society versus basketball. An open air festival is planned for Saturday July 16 at the Plainfield band stand lot to raise funds for the salary of the County Home Demonstrator replacing Miss Pansy Norton.

Local Farmers Thresh Wheat. Early Yields Reported

Wheat threshing is widespread in the area with average grade No. 3 and test weights from 57 to 59 pounds. Plainfield Milling's B W Anderson warns yields will be only slightly above half a crop and grades may be low due to bad grain. First market wheat from Plainfield graded No. 5 at 52 to 54 pounds, shipped to Camby station. Camby wheat by George Robinson graded No. 8 at 57 pounds.

Camp Short Hosts Local Families This Week
