Dense fog delays travel and a string of local items from North Plainfield. Council meetings, railroad contracts, a lamp explosion, auctions, baptisms of public works, and a charity bazaar are noted alongside arrests, court actions, and upcoming entertainments.
Reputable citizens report that City Treasurer Titsworth and City Collector John son were read as signers on a petition calling for a citizen’s movement at the Democratic City Convention last night. Both men deny signing and say their names were added without knowledge. A Democrat notes other Republican nominees, Hubbard and Vanderbeck, appear on the petition, but similarly without consent.
The City Democratic Convention at Emmanuel Baptist Church devolved into a farce as the Big Six influence produced three preselected nominees while officials noted lack of consent from Democrats to stand. A citizen’s ticket petition was rejected and Jim Donohue denounced the proceedings as fake.
An engineer on Blue Line Express No 511 believed he struck a man at Grant Avenue station when the victim stepped from behind a coal train. The search found no body, and the train continued. Later William Diegler, of New York, said he was struck while crossing the tracks, suffering a crushed right arm and internal injuries. He was taken to Muhlenberg Hospital.
Timothy J. McCarty sued the Central Railroad of New Jersey for 200 damages claiming sparks from an engine set his barn afire on June 6. Judge William R. Codington awarded McCarty 200 damages plus costs in Justice Nash's court.
Twenty members of Washington Engine Company No. 1 Rahway visited Westfield’s Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 Monday. The Rahway parade last October featured Westfield’s visit to Rahway. A framed group photo of the visiting Rahway firefighters was presented to Westfield and will hang with photos of all Rahway companies.
Louis Rudolph Laurent, a well known jeweler, died at his home on Somerset Street just before nine last evening after a lingering illness from a series of diseases. He was forty seven and leaves a widow with no children. The funeral will be held Friday at two oclock from the German Reformed Church in North Plainfield, with interment in the United Methodist Cemetery. Also reports a bright light in the southern sky signaling a large fire near New Market.
The State Board of Assessors increased railroad assessments to 1,429,205 with 1,050,224 for state use and 378,980 for taxing districts. Central Railroad of New Jersey shows modest rise to 44,799,810, tax 223,999 for state and 76,433 for districts. Philadelphia and Reading system, eleven miles in state, valued at 7,373,159, tax total 39,680 with state 36,865 and districts 2,820.
The Boys Club of the First Baptist Church elected officers yesterday afternoon with Norman H. H. Probasco as President and Charles Fernald as Vice President. Arthur Crane became Secretary and Harry Fernald Treasurer. A football team was organized with Alexander Milne as captain and members A. B. Carpenter J. Shepherd H. Woolston George Snedeiker Arthur Crane Harry Drake E. Peck H. Woodland J. Schenck N. Probasco.
Despite stormy weather Franklin Council No 41 Junior Order of United American Mechanics opened a fair last night with a large attendance. The event is held in the rooms of the Republican Association and will continue each evening for the rest of the week.
Miss Alice Holmes and Mr. E E Runyon will perform at an entertainment hosted by the Fanwood Bowling Club for the benefit of All Saint Episcopal Church of Scotch Plains. The event is set for the evening of Wednesday November 18.

A sudden death occurred in the Brooklyn Bridge waiting room around 6 30 at night with Frank N. Bower aiding the deceased to 111 Channey street Brooklyn for the funeral tomorrow afternoon. Tonight George Thatcher and Rich Harrison’s Comedy Company performed at Taylor’s Opera House Trenton to a packed audience with top humor and strong singing. the troupe, led by Thatcher and Dougherty, will repeat at Music Hall tomorrow evening and again draw a large crowd.
In Trenton yesterday Samuel Beekman and Jennie Wiley appealed their murder conviction for ill treatment of Beekman's child. Counsel for the defense argued writ of error alleging improper prosecutor appointment by Senator Marsh.
