Captain James Rees Dies. Noted Pittsburgh Engine Builder
Captain James Rees of Pittsburgh East End died yesterday morning at age 69. Born in Wales on December 25, 1820, he moved to America at age seven and helped shape local industry through partnerships in nut and bolt trade, Knapp, Carter & Co, and Duquesne Engine Works. He built the first steel plate steamboat Fras- cen Montoya and several vessels, earning esteem among rivermen and city leaders. His death drew widespread mourning as tests of steel vessels proved his faith in steel’s strength. A piano selling scheme via Everett Club offers $75 savings on cash price with installment options and weekly draws.
