Pittsburg Descendants Push for Recognition of Early Ironclad Ram Inventor
An early prototype memorial seeks Congressional recognition for Thomas Gregg of Connellsville, Fayette County, Pa., as the investor of the first ball proof naval ram. Gregg’s descendants, led by J. B. and U. S. G. Gregg of Philadelphia, cite a patent dated March 1814 bearing Madison Monroe and Bush signatures as proof, noting Gregg’s family ties in Pittsburg.

Inventor Thomas Gregg and the Merrimac Story
A fragmented reminiscence traces Thomas Gregg of Newcastle Delaware, an early iron inventor, and his claims to the ironclad Merrimac. It notes his furnace, salt, and iron works, a stolen design, and later patent renewals, with claims of priority against naval officers and Congress, ending with appeals for widow’s justice and recognition of Gregg’s role.

Noblest Charity Pioneers for Italian Orphans in New York
A new order of Italian Sisters, the Silesian Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, arrives in New York at Archbishop Corrigan’s request to care for homeless Italian orphans. Sisters Cavrini and staff operate a yellow stone house on East Twenty-ninth Street, reaching into East Harlem and Little Italy to feed clothe and educate children aged 4 to 15, especially vulnerable girls, through private subscriptions and Catholic clergy support. They labor amid tenements and poverty, aiming to rescue and reform youth abandoned or denied decent homes, with plans to expand care for boys later.
