Rise of large scale farming in Pinehurst area gains pace
The Slater family and leading New York bankers including Frederick J. Gates are buying and developing thousands of acres near Pinehurst Virginia and the Carolinas. Gates plans to raise a diversified plantation while others like Edgar L. Marston B. Chapin and Walter H. Page establish country homes and a Farmers' Cooperative Association. Land remains affordable to attract newcomers as Sandhill Farmers' Association and County Board of Trade promote sales and guidance for homeseekers and investors.
