Fort Fisher the Largest Confederate Fortification
Fort Fisher stood between the Cape Fear river and the ocean on Federal Point. Built in 1861 to resist naval attack, it guarded Wilmington and featured earth ramparts, heavy guns, and a complex interior with bomb-proof passages. The fort’s design influenced later harbor defenses and included a mound battery, curtain lines, and Whitworth guns.
