The Post Office announces new rates effective after November 2 1917. First class letters pay three cents per ounce or fraction. drop letters remain two cents per ounce. post cards require two cents prepaid and private mailing cards with writing require two cents. Postmasters must ensure proper postage on all mail.
K. J. Watson, commissioner of agriculture commerce and industries for South Carolina, died at his Columbia home Saturday afternoon after a prolonged throat tuberculosis illness.
In Ambler the Sunday School plans a Go-to Sunday School Day on November 4 at 2 PM. J R Connelly and guests will sing. C L Craig and others speak on why attend Sunday School. Families and friends are urged to attend.
Five more Negro soldiers were sent from Pickens County to Camp Jackson at Columbia last Saturday morning. A public meeting in their honor was held in the courthouse Friday with J. P. Carey Jr addressing them. Rev. Gibbes spoke and soldiers received razors and comfort bags. colored women served supper. Names listed include Hoyt Terrell Anderson Willie Devore Boggs Guy Foster Crosby Towns Sam Williams Husker Green and Juve Smith who failed to appear. a telegram from Joe Smith said he was in Knoxville ready to go to the army.
A Pleasant Grove letter reports quiet community health and a light frost on October 14. Fodder pulling, molasses making, cotton picking, and potato digging are underway. corn crop is good. Incidents include Marion Sillenburg’s frightened scramble for wood and two pilot stakes, plus visits from Ben Queen, Nora Queen, Lawrence Elrod, and Matthew Edens. A box supper at Wash Chastain’s raised 30.25 for church use.
A Central High School prayer service drew locals and pastors with talks by Revs. J. C. Bailey M. R. Robertson and C. A. Kirby. Mothers prayed for their boys and American soldiers. Other items include Bailey's regular appointment, Mrs. Baylus Hendricks visiting, and plans to attend Billy Sunday in Atlanta.
Public school teachers of Pickens county are invited to a meeting at Easley school house next Saturday at 11 oclock. Prof Lucco Gunter state supervisor of rural graded schools will speak on Making of a Country School after a brief organization. Lunch will be served by Easley ladies.
The Pickens County Chapter of the American Red Cross was formed with 250 members at the Court House in Pickens on Saturday. The new county-wide chapter unites former Greenville branch members and veterans of the war effort. Officers elected include J. J. McCrary as chairman and Mrs. J. J. Carey Jr as vice chairwoman, with Mrs. Ed Mauldin secretary and J. Hagood Bruce treasurer. A supplementary auxiliary has begun among local Colored citizens.
Pendleton Farmers Society of Oconee Anderson and Pickens counties announces a 1917 18 wheat contest with three acre and one acre prizes. Entries must be filed by January 1 1918 to Mr Echo P Sitton secretary Pendleton S C or with the county agent. Prize money is converted to pure bred cattle or hops. at least three competitors required per category. no entry in both contests. one half bushel wheat and cost history must be shown.
Mr. D. H. Woodson of Six Mile and Mrs. Annie Durham of Norris wed at Col. Hi R Billingsly’s residence with Billingsly officiating. The ceremony occurred Sunday October 20th with the notary public presiding.
