Auditor Townes received a request from A W Jones of the South Carolina State commission to provide township by township counts of horses and mules and their assessed value in Pickens County for 17. The auditor supplied the following information in response.
Easley locals note IRS John B. Jameson returned from Hot Springs Arkansas after weeks away for health. Rev J Dean Craine, a mountain evangelist, will preach at the Easley school auditorium next Sunday morning. Jubal Williams and Clarence Smith, recently enlisted in the Butler Guards, visited their homes in Laurens for several days this week.
P H Sellers of Easley a prominent citizen died at his home Friday morning after suffering a stroke of paralysis last Saturday. A blacksmith inspector for the Southern Railway he had made Easley his home for eight years. He is survived by his wife and four children Mrs Roy Smith Miss Virgil Miss Margaret and master Robert Sellers. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon by Rev J C Holler and Rev Mr Holroyd.
Mrs. B F Rike died after a long illness at her home in Central on Tuesday May 15. She and her husband Mr. Rike were longtime residents of Central and ran a boarding house there. She leaves six or ten children and many friends. Interment was held Wednesday at Mt Ion cemetery.
W O W announces the unveiling of a monument to Sov W B Holcombe on June 10 at 3:30 in Lathem cemetery near Hester. Reverend D W Hiatt of Easley will deliver the address. All neighboring camps sovereigns and the public are invited.

Weather harms cotton wheat oats and gardens in Cateechee as locals cope with scarcity. Blackberries may salvage groceries while drills celebrate a Rebekah lodge cake walk raising 29.45 for Sunday school. Norris mill head W P Ward aided. Norris High School closed with praise and a surprise for Prof Kirby and wife after a strong program.
Keating Lodge No. 12k expresses sympathy for Brother Joe Dodson on the death of his child Oliver. The resolution asks Dodson family to find hope in faith and requests publication in The Pickens Sentinel. May 22, 1917.
In Sugar Valley Ga crops look good except cotton showing a yellowish cast from dry weather. Ollis N Sutherland recovers from catarrhal fever and double pneumonia. Local residents visited W D Sutherland and family while Mrs W D Sutherland recovers. Mae Dickey ended school term with a picnic. Rev Blackburn spoke on Catholicism. Marl Morris and Raymond Cox of Pickens moved to Charleston for work.
Petitions are being signed asking for a pardon for J P Anders who killed Mr Capps in the county years ago. He pleaded frailty at trial and has served three years of a five year county chain gang sentence. Also noted, Mrs J D Hunt of Greenville died last Friday after a lingering illness. She leaves a husband two sons and a daughter.
Pickens school closed a successful session with a Sunday sermon by Rev Edward R Mason of Greenville and a high standard graduation Monday. Gen Bonham delivered a noted address introduced by Judge Mauldin. W C T U prizes for seventh and eighth graders went to Mary Hallum Janie Holder Ethlyn Gantt. U D C medal won by Joe Frank Freeman with honorable mentions to Eleanor Farle and Margaret Aiken.
Florida Leota Aiken wed George Eliott Williams of Massey on May 24 1917 at St Pauls Methodist church Greenville witnessed by immediate friends Rev A F Holler officiated the ceremony. The couple will reside in Easley where Williams works at the Easley bank after earlier service as a Basley express agent and is regarded as a popular young businessman.
Cedric voices the struggles of local farmers in Pumpkintown as they plow steep hills, fight weather, and face high prices. The note mentions Anders joining the army and a weary tone about war coverage and daily news.
Miss Julia Callaham Chapman and Mr John Perry Glenn wed at the Presbyterian church in Liberty on May 1 1917 at 8 o clock. Rev J C Bailey officiated and a reception followed at the bride’s home with many friends giving best wishes to the couple.
Deputy Sheriff Jim Williams of Anderson killed Barnes Wilson and wounded Henry Curran during a late night shooting near Starr just south of Anderson. The party included Jake Gosnell and Wilson among officers or ex officers, all drinking in Gosnell's car when the shot occurred. Wilson was well known in Pickens for his revenue service work.
A reader requests space in the food paper for a few dots about a mail carrier on Route 3 and questions the supervisor. The note also mentions Sarah Price, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Price, who is seriously ill.
