Negro Soldier Samuel Hunter Dies at Camp Jackson

Samuel Hunter colored, son of Bright Hunter of near Pickens, died at Camp Jackson from natural causes. His body was returned to this county and buried at Union M. I. church near Liberty after services led by Rev. John Gibbes. Hunter was among the last colored troops sent from Pickens to Camp Jackson on April 25, with Aleck Johnson accompanying the body.

Death of local planter J Theodore Smith at 74

J Theodore Smith died at his Easley home Thursday after a years long illness. A prominent planter born in Anderson county he lived on Brushy Creek farm until moving to Easley. Funeral held Friday at Pickens chapel near his old home. Survived by three daughters Alma Charlotte Smith of Easley and Mrs John Sheriff of Orangeburg and five sons M C Smith Pickens I B Smith Easley Luther G Smith Orangeburg Burdine Smith Savannah and Clarence Smith Savannah.

Clemson Scholarships Offer County Vacancy This Summer

One four year scholarship is open in Pickens county with a competitive exam at the courthouse on July 12 at 9 a m. A scholarship student may also obtain aid from the U S government. The one year agricultural course scholarship remains available. Interested parties should contact the county paper for education details.

Red Cross lecture on war effort in Central school

Special Red Cross event in Central features Rowland Campbell a former South Carolina volunteer who served at the front. He will display gas masks rifles and other equipment used against German forces. Community fundraising drive runs May 20 to 27 with outreach to Abell church and local supporters.

Pickens May Get Cheese Factory

The Tamassee correspondent reports Clemson College plans to establish a chain of cheese factories across Oconee Pickens Greenville and Spartanburg counties. The first will be on the D A R school property near the building site with construction to move quickly for a summer opening.

Birthday Celebration Honors Mr Jack Garrett in May

A surprise birthday dinner was held May 10 at the home of Mr and Mrs Mark 3B Bolding Pea Ridge for Mr Jack Garrett who turned eighty three. He is visiting his sister Mrs Mark Bolding and brother Wm R Garrett with other relatives in the county. W N Bolding and Edd Garrett spoke and the gathering enjoyed the occasion.

Davis Couple Celebrates 68th and 65th Wedding Anniversaries

Relatives and friends gathered at the Davis home near Liberty on Sunday May 5 to honor Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Davis on his 68th and her 65th wedding anniversaries. About 100 attendees, including men women and children, heard brief talks from Rev. T. Durham Rev. J. W. Sheriff and Ib. P. McCravey and left wishing many more happy years for the couple.
