Increased Tax On Horses and Mules in Pickens County
The South Carolina Tax Commission ordered a 75 percent rise in horse and mule assessments in Pickens County. 1458 horses valued at about 38 000 and 128 mules valued at 84 000 will see increases totaling roughly 91 000, lifting the combined value from about 122 000 to 213 000. Auditor Townes must adjust his duplicate books to reflect the uniform rate, averaging 46.06 per horse and 48.34 per mule.

Hinton to Move to Pickens From Easley
Mr Hinton will move this week to Pickens from his Easley home where he has lived most of his life. The First Baptist Sunday school in Easley honored him with a silver service after seven years as superintendent. He leaves to take charge of the treasurer's office in Pickens.

Mrs Joseph Price Dead Near Pickens
Mrs Joseph Price died at her son in law W Taylor Stewarts home near Pickens Friday aged about 80. Funeral services were by Rev Bryant and burial followed at Crow Creek. She leaves three children J S H Price Seneca Mrs W H Cox Central and Mrs W T Stewart Pickens area. The Pickens W C T U will meet with Mrs J M Gantt Thursday at 5 PM.

Death of Mrs Hughes at Liberty home
Mrs Annie Hughes died at her brother in law Harry Dickard near Liberty on June 6 at 11 pm after a five month illness. She was 64 and a daughter of late John H White. Survived by one son from her first marriage to J W Hyde. Funeral at Enon Church the next day at 4 pm conducted by Rev J C Bailey.

Mrs C S Goldsmith died at her home on Pickens route 4 last Thursday and was buried at Holly Springs Friday. She leaves a husband and several children to mourn her death. This family moved to Pickens county from Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. We extend sympathy to the bereaved.

F Van Clayton of Central was in Pickens on business last week and was elected superintendent of education for Pickens county last year. He will assume duties about the first of July and will make Pickens his home after that time.

Pickens County Court Adjourns After Two-Day Session
The June term of Pickens county general sessions wrapped after two days. The most notable case was State v Hughes, a white man convicted of carnal knowledge of a girl under 14 with mercy recommended. sentenced to two and a half years in the penitentiary. Other outcomes included not guilty for Arnold Shirley on housebreaking and larceny. Thomas Carter convicted of burglary with mercy recommendation and five-year sentence. Aaron Barrett held on prohibition charge with a mistrial after eight hours deliberation. Craig case unresolved. many true bills found and cases continued.

Grand Jury Presentment to Judge Mauldin 1917
The grand jury reports from February 26 to June 4 1917 show rural policemen sent 1284 days to the chain gang with fines and forfeitures of 1009.70 dollars, seized 84 1 2 gallons of whiskey and destroyed five stills. It asks waterways be cleared, demands monthly fines reports from magistrates, and urges bondmen to cover county treasurer shortages before the new term. The jurors thank Judge Mauldin and court officials.

Death of Mrs Silas Hinkel in Jocassee
Mrs. Winnie Nicholson Hinkel died at her home in Jocassee on June 6 at age 49 after a period of illness. She leaves an aged husband, eight children and nineteen grandchildren, plus other relatives. She conducted the Brown Hotel at Jocassee for three years and was buried at Mt. Carmel duplist church. Surviving children include Mrs. Ki C Thomas of Liberty and Mrs. W S Langston of Greenville.

All Day Singing Convened by Liberty Township and Mt Tabor
The Liberty Township Singing convention meets with Flat Rock Baptist church on the third Sunday at 10 AM. Everyone invited to bring songbooks and dinner baskets. An all day singing is planned at Mt Tabor church two miles south of Central on the fourth Sunday in June the 24th.
