County Exhibit Opens October 13 With Canning Prizes

Pickens county clubs announce prizes for a county exhibit at the courthouse on Saturday October 13. Both first and second year canning girls compete in tomato jars, ketchup, pickles, preserves, jellies, and vegetables with cash awards. A minstrel program at the school house Friday night features dances and drills by ladies.

Over 300 Examined For Army Last Week

More than 800 men were examined in Pickens last Tuesday to Thursday for entry into the United States army. Forty nine passed the physical and did not claim exemption. Many who passed claimed exemption, but decisions are pending. About thirty-odd failed to appear and will be listed as passing and sent to the army. Pickens county must furnish 182 men by October, with reporting deadlines spread through September. Examinations were held at Keowee Pharmacy and led by Dr J J Valley, Dr Th J Jameson, and Dr JD Bearcen.

Pickens County Honor Roll Names of Forty-Nine Inductees

The county lists forty nine young men who passed the army physical last week and did not claim exemption. They will be called into service around September fifth. The Sentinel will publish more names and details as they are obtained from the local selective service board. Ex Governor Blease to Speak at Pickens

Ex governor Cole Llease will address a farmers meeting at Pickens courthouse on Saturday August 25 at 10 am. Prominent speakers will discuss issues of importance to all the people. Admission is 1 cent. proceeds go to the Red Cross at a minstrel show Friday night.

Pickens County natives named new army officers

Several Pickens county citizens have completed training at government camps and been appointed officers in the army. among them are William Joseph Hunter of Liberty named captain in infantry, Q R Chapman of Liberty as second lieutenant infantry, Paul Robinson of Easley as second lieutenant infantry, B Johnson of Easley as second lieutenant quartermaster corps, and Andrew F Bramlett appointed captain in the coast artillery.
