The Sentinel plans to publish occasional items and letters from Pickens county soldiers and invites more correspondence for public interest.
A Camp Jackson letter from H. W. Hierr details Pickens county servicemen. Bristow Christopher and B F Hendrix work at the Base Hospital. Corporal Frank Rogers of Easley serves in the 318th Field Artillery. Ed Louis Perry Barton Trayloe from Liberty and T J Patton from Pumpkintown recently arrived from the draft. Ed Louis and Trayloe discharged. Barton at Base Hospital. others in France.
A. W. Gravley died at his home near Pickens on April 17 after a two week illness, Brights disease listed as the cause though he suffered a wagon accident April 4. Born 1866 he leaves a large family including a wife, five children, siblings, and brothers in Texas. A longtime church leader and advocate for better schools, he built a successful farm and hospitality marked his life. burial was at Porter's Chapel cemetery after funeral services led by Rev. W. H. Lewis and two other ministers.
Mrs. Elizabeth Porter widow of J. M. Porter died at 85 years eight months. Funeral at Mountain Grove church with Rev. B. G. Field officiating. She leaves children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, plus sisters and a brother, with long family ties in Holly Springs Baptist lore. Her burial followed her husband J. M. Porter’s 1912 death.
Paul Herd twenty eight year old son of D A Herd of Mile Creek died Saturday April 20 after months long tuberculosis. Interment at Second Sunday funeral by Rev W C Seaborn. Survived by father step mother one sister Mrs W W Seaborn four brothers Lem Piedmont Walter Columbus Ga Frank Greenville and Edd address unknown. Nephew of R I Herd Pickens. Mother Miss Nettie Thomas before marriage sister of John W and Joe T Thomas Murphy. Peace to his ashes.
John Mauldin died in a Greenville hospital late last Wednesday night from pneumonia. The 35 year old son of Abe and Mrs. Mauldin of Easley, he was an employee of Southern Railway and buried at Enon church Friday. He is survived by his wife and one child. The family had resided in Greenville. Bailey Lumber Co advertisement appears in this issue.
Rural women of Pickens and surrounding areas are urged to attend a court house meeting next Thursday afternoon April 25 at 4 o clock to discuss various patriotic tasks. All who can help are welcome. if unable to attend, phone number 40 in Pickens to offer assistance.

List of white men and colored men selected for immediate military service to report to Pickens Local Board on April 25 and 28 to depart for Camp Jackson. 33 white men and 25 colored men listed with towns such as Easley Liberty Pickens Calhoun Norris and others. 8 white ready to go with 2 alternates and 25 colored to go with 5 alternates.
Soldier Boy Grover H. Galloway of Camp Sevier visits his father in Mile Creek area on his first furlough after six months in service. The note praises his upcoming duty and resolve to fight in France.
Piedmont Presbytery covering Pickens Oconee and Anderson counties will meet in Pendleton on a Tuesday night this week Two new pastors have been secured Rev A N Littlejohn to Clemson College and Rev W Emmett Davis to Westminster Both will graduate from the Columbia seminary in May Dr J J Thacker recently closed five meetings at First church and Central church in Anderson Messrs L Boggs R E Yongue J T McAllister and J S Hall will represent Rev J C Bailey's group of churches.
Local notes mention Rev. A. E. Belk of Asheville preaching at Wesleyan College, Phillip Morgan from Seneca visiting relatives, and several townsfolk with weekend outings. Citizens urged to buy Liberty Bonds, train service changes affect schedules, and a theft at Mr Moody's restaurant highlighted.
Matthew Wendrix, long blind, has returned from a two week hospital stay in Atlanta after a minor eye operation. He can walk unaided and recognize faces, drawing joy from friends and acquaintances. Hendrix bought a Maxwell touring car and visited his parents in Camp Jackson. J D Vickery leads a thriving Sunday school as letters go out to former soldier boys and a service flag is planned.

Dr J B George died at his Gainesville Georgia home on April Sth aged fifty seven. He lived in Pickens County and earlier worked in Easley with Dr J W Quillian, marrying Quillian’s eldest daughter Lalla and leaving two sons and a daughter. Mrs R T Stewart of Liberty is his sister. two brothers and sisters survive. George was born in Walhalla and was a Presbyterian elder and prominent Cainesville citizen. Eugene Snead aged about 26, a Glenwood Cotton Mills operative, died after an appendicitis operation and was interred at West View cemetery with wife and three young children, and two sisters and a brother. Members of Pickens County Democratic clubs will meet at polling places on Saturday April 27 1918 to reorganize elect officers and appoint delegates to the county convention at Pickens May 6 Each club gets one delegate per five members or majority fraction The president and secretary must certify delegate lists to County Chairman G K Notts by May 4
The Bastatoe Democratic Club will meet at the Antioch schoolhouse next Saturday at 2 PM for reorganization. A.T. Winchester is listed as the organizer.
