Pickens Hosts Third Liberty Loan Kickoff In Parade and Bonds
The Third Liberty Loan drive began in Pickens with a large turnout at the courthouse. Robt. A. Cooper, state Liberty Loan chair, urged local response as over twenty thousand dollars in bonds were sold, including purchases by colored citizens. A parade, Red Cross display, and music accompanied the event, honoring Major Terrell and boosting wartime morale.

Stewart Hurt In Dynamite Cap Explosion
Mr. Robt Stewart suffered a cap blast injury while picking dirt from a dynamite cap last Thursday. The blast blew off the ends of a thumb and two fingers and lightly wounded his forehead. Though in pain he remains mobile and claims better sleep after the accident. A Confederate veteran, he refused medicine for pain and calmly watched the doctor remove the mangled fingers and saw the bones.

Newberry Man Forced to Kiss Flag Amid Public Retraction
Forest Butler was compelled by a crowd of Newberry cotton mill employees to retract statements against the government and kiss the flag in a public display of loyalty. The gathering then dispersed, said to be the first such incident in the state.

Two Easley Soldiers Die In Quick Succession
Elmer Holcombe, the first Pickens county white soldier to die in the army, died at Camp Wheeler Georgia last week. His body was shipped to Easley for burial. Lee Wilson of Easley died in California from injuries in a street car crash. Both men volunteered for the army and died within a week of each other, residents of the Glenwood mill village.

Mrs Hortense Stansell Simmons 32 wife of John Simmons died at home near Pickens after a week long illness. Funeral and burial at Secona church conducted by Rev W C Seaborn. She was a Holly Spring Baptist member and known across the county.

Methodist minister Reverend Charles Hovey Clyde died at his home in Greenville last Thursday morning after a long illness. He was the son of the late W. A. Clyde of Easley and uncle to Joseph B. Clyde, former county auditor. Survived by wife, two daughters, Wallace Clyde, one brother W. L. Clyde of Rock Hill, and three sisters. Funeral at St Paul Methodist church in Greenville conducted by Rev. A. E. Holler, burial in Graceland cemetery.
