General John P. McConnell announces a golden rule program to improve how officers and enlisted personnel are treated. He stresses mutual respect, counseling, career information, and considerate conduct from leadership to junior officers and airmen across the force.
The valley wide engineers strike remains stalled with no scheduled talks between labor and management. The walkout began on Interstate 10 projects and halted cement and asphalt work statewide. unions seek higher pay while plasterers reach a one year settlement with independent contractors.
The Phoenix police department logged 837 calls in 48 hours ending at 10 am. There were 82 accidents including 23 with injuries and one fatality. Major crime totals include 17 assaults 15 grand thefts 56 burglaries 4 robberies and 1 homicide.
Tempe police officer E. J. Ysasi performed mouth to mouth resuscitation on two year old Allen Abbott who was pulled from a pool by his mother Judith Abbott. Fire department rushed him to Tempe Community Hospital where he recovered. The incident involved a faulty fence gate latch at the pool on 1031 East Lemon Street.
In Seoul the Minjung Party was launched by Chung Hee Park opponents aiming to block normalization talks with Japan. The inaugural convention united two major opposition factions and drew 970 attendees.
A gala White House festival of the arts opened with 175 guests as Mrs. Johnson welcomed attendees.
