Valley Girl Sentenced in Trio of Robberies

Shirley Ann Hembree 22 of Chandler Arizona received one year in Stanislaus County jail and five years probation for her role in three armed holdups. Superior Court Judge Robert D. Carter cited cooperation with officers as a factor in the light sentence. She admitted driving the getaway car. two men and another woman await trial. They were arrested in Phoenix on May 8.

Bandits Get 164000 In Gold

Royal Canadian Mounted Police hunt a professional gang after five gold bars worth 164000 were seized from the Virginiatown station of the Ontario Northland Railroad. The robbers tied up the agent, fled by car, abandoned the auto, and then likely used a seaplane from a lake eight miles away. Station agent Tom Tonkin described the raid as the work of professionals.

Youth Held In Shooting On Street

An 18 year old, Othellon Hannon of 3752 East Anne, is held on a deadly weapon assault charge after a street shooting in the 3600 block of East Anne. Victim Delbert Branham, 23, of 3720 East Anne, is in critical condition with a chest wound at county hospital. Branham’s passenger Elmer Slaughter, 26, of 2835 East Wier, was treated and released for a hand wound. Police say Hannon surrendered after driving home. he claims Branham blocked his path and forced him to fire into Branham’s car.

Surrender Ends Nationwide Bank Robbery Hunt

Duane Pope 22 who had just earned a degree at McPherson College surrendered in Kansas City after a nationwide search. He admitted nothing about the June 4 Farmers State Bank of Big Springs robbery in which three employees were killed and a fourth wounded. The FBI now holds Pope on a 100000 bond pending further proceedings.

Fires Struck Two Downtown Sites in Night Blaze Run

Three fires concluded from page one and a block from 11th Avenue and Lincoln in a manure pile. In 24 hours ending at 7 am today there were 50 fire calls nine of them suspicious. Fire units were moved to tackle simultaneously the Central Methodist and Seminary Christian church fires. Firebug activity quieted after overnight flames but daylight witnesses have not come forward.

A Census Bureau report places Arizona fourth in combined state and local taxes per $1,000 personal income for fiscal 1963-64 ending June 30. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and California rank higher, while Alaska is last. Delaware DC Missouri figures also noted.
