Crop Union Leader Quits In New Rift
Fred Finell resigns as president of the Salt River District Local 78 CIO Food Tobacco and Agricultural Workers Union effective January 1 after saying he received no cooperation from the executive board. He plans to remain a member. The local, with about 3000 workers, reorganized last July and has had no contract since September 1. Kenneth Bowen called the board efficient and said negotiations would resume soon. The district was previously mismanaged after a 1947 lettuce strike and an AFL Teamsters attempt to take over was blocked by the NLRB.
