Witness Had Narrow Escape Near Pierre In 1864
Leonidas Merritt who has recently testified before the Stanley committee about John D Rockefeller's ore lands in northern Minnesota once escaped Indian attackers on Snake Butte three miles north of Pierre. He was a Minnesota soldier in 1864 and leaped from a river bluff to hide in brakes as dusk set in, reaching Fort Sully near Farm Island by morning in an exhausted state. He later returned to Pierre seeking the exact site of the event but found no success.
