Big Sawmill to reopen under Olaf Arness
Olaf Arness completed the purchase of the P. C. & N. P. Co. sawmill and plans to reopen it next spring after repairs and overhauls. The Alaska mill, idle for years, is the region’s largest, with 35 000 feet daily capacity that could double with modest additional work and power. The purchase, worth over 100000 dollars originally, secures Petersburg against a Seattle junk company's bid to move the plant south.

Silver Cup Awarded to Petersburg Merchant at Seattle Convention
The Seattle Chamber of Commerce awards the Silver Cup to S L Hogue of Hogue & Tre ton Petersburg Alaska for the largest purchases during the Northwest Merchants Convention in Seattle. The cup will be exhibited briefly on Second Avenue before being shipped north. The six day convention drew an estimated fifteen hundred to two thousand merchants from across the Northwest and Alaska.

Northland afloat after wrecking crew raises steamer Northland
Captain Bissett and his wrecking outfit at Rake report the steamer Northland has been raised from ten feet in mud and ninety feet submerged at high tide. The hull and machinery suffer minimal damage while most cargo is ruined. The ship towed to Petersburg then Seattle for cleanup and towing. Northland sank at Kake on July 24 last year.

Alaska to Have 20 Candidates in Officers' Reserve Corps
Advices from Washington say Delegate Sulzer secured 20 Alaska candidates for the second officers reserve corps. The camp opens at the Presidio in San Francisco on August 27. Applications were mailed to U S commissioners and must be returned to Major Saville at Fort Wm H Seward. From submitted applications 20 men will be chosen on August 30 and ordered to report to San Francisco. Candidates receive 100 dollars per month during training plus transportation and other expenses.
