Tragedies Hit Clearfield in 1906 Four Mills Blown Up and Power Plant

The Clearfield Republican recounts a catastrophic late 1906 period with four local businesses destroyed within weeks. A.H. Reed feed mill, M.G Brown sawmill, a powder mill near Clearfield Creek, and a massive boiler explosion at the Central Pennsylvania Light and Power Company plant caused widespread damage, with one fatality, John Byers, the night engineer. The blast damaged nearby homes, with estimated mill losses reaching 15,000 dollars and plant damage around 25,000 dollars, prompting rapid reconstruction efforts and community alarms amid aftershocks and public notices.

Tobacco use in military sparks calls for overhaul

Editorial from The Associated Press notes a high tobacco rate among active duty and veterans, with costs over 6.6 billion yearly for DoD and VA medical care. It urges a phased ban on tobacco on military installations, stricter handling of tobacco like other health issues, and a timeline toward elimination. It also questions societal reflexes amid road rage in construction zones and urges greater civic consideration for workers.
