Procedures for raising and lowering the national flag include sunrise and sunset timings, half mast on Memorial Day, peak-and-lower technique, and respect in ceremonies. Guidelines cover parade visibility, wearing, decoration, draping, and position with other flags, casket placement, and sea distress reversals.
The Hardy Manufacturing Company in Pendleton receives several auto industry contracts prompting installation of a new eighteen ton brake drum stamping press. The large machine occupies ten by ten feet of floor space, rises fourteen feet, and requires roof supports. The press arrived yesterday and is being unloaded. The firm has grown from a small operation to a sizable factory with ongoing day and night work. The piece closes with hopeful notes for further expansion. Also noted is a Five Hundred Club gathering hosted by Mrs. R. E. Brookbank on South Pendleton Avenue with guests from Akron and Knightstown and a list of members present.
Mrs Walter Whitley hosted the Nightengale Club on a Tuesday evening with music contests and refreshments. Miss Helen Gustin won the contest and Mrs Glen Sisson read an interesting paper. Attendees included Mrs Sisson, Mrs Koeniger, Mrs Cooper, and Misses Leona Teague Lena Gustin and Helen Gustin. The next meeting will be in two weeks with Mrs Cooper.
Miss La Verne Longtoft of Ohio State College returns to Pendleton to spend the summer with her parents at Idlewold. Rev. Powell was in Muncie Wednesday attending the Epworth League convention.
The camp register records several visitors since last Thursday including C. F. Blaker and three daughters from Caruthersville Missouri on June 7, Wm Terry from Atlantic City New Jersey on June 8, W J Twiss from Fitzgerald Georgia on June 11, Ray S Goble and daughter visiting for the fourth time on June 11, W T Noling of Minneola Florida on June 11, A P Jacobson his wife and baby traveling from Seattle to Jacksonville on June 13, A Smith his wife mother and brother from Detroit Michigan on June 13, H H Kugler and wife from Galveston Texas to Detroit Michigan with Mamie Malkin also from Detroit on June 13, and Elva Martin of Elvins Missouri on June 13.
Dr. Will Beeson of Terre Haute visited Pendleton for a few hours on Wednesday to greet old school friends. He spent his boyhood in Pendleton before moving to Terre Haute with his parents in 1880. His father died years ago and his mother last November. He was amazed by the town’s changes since his youth.
Mr and Mrs A B Beckner hosted a fried chicken dinner for house guest Mrs William Barrett of Indianapolis and friends Helen McCarty Rolland Ireland Churchill Cox. Other locals entertained include Albert Ireland and family and several couples planning Sunday meals. Mrs O M Shaul of Akron visiting her parents before moving to Ponca City Oklahoma.
Pendleton announces the Igelman Blakely School of Music with a prominent faculty and a six week vocal course led by soprano Miss M Elma Igelman from Boston. Opening recital set for June 20 at the Methodist Church and enrollment begins June 15.
The Art Association and all interested in local history will gather at the Friends Picnic House for a community picnic and discussion. Local historians and residents are invited to share projects and memories about the area.
A meeting will begin at 3:30 followed by a basket supper. Several prominent guests are expected to attend.
Beginning Sunday and lasting one week the church hosts Vacation Bible School with sessions 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Each night features evangelistic services led by a 12 year old Child Evangelist. Children are invited to attend all sessions, with hiking and games included.
Knightstown residents enjoyed an evening of entertainment on Wednesday hosted by the Rebecca Lodge. Nelle Kramer and Florence Sherwood attended the Knightstown event as guests of honor. Mr and Mrs W E Witmer drove to Findlay Illinois last Friday to visit Mrs Witmer’s parents Mr and Mrs E E Earp and returned Tuesday evening. Mrs Russell Ireland and her son will join Mr Ireland in Chicago where he has accepted a job and they will make their future home there.
Jonas May of Mattoon Illinois will join the summer term at Columbia University as a guest at the W A Teague home. He plans to pursue studies during the upcoming session.
