Miss Agnes Harmeson who has served as the guard ian angel of The Times office for the past two years resigned her position last week. The Times regrets her leaving as she was a dependable employee.
In twenty three years of business activity, Miss Clarene Rector and Miss Irene Kunz will spend Tuesday and Wednesday with friends at Christman, His. Mr. William Sears is a patient in the hospital at Anderson.
Pendleton merchants report a lively Christmas shopping week with crowds in shops each evening. Stores like Crosley Taylor’s Grocery and I G Davis Furniture showcase seasonal decorations while others such as Watter’s Variety Store and Ed Morton plan holiday sales and special meals. The Times notes with festive spirit that shops remain busy and extend best wishes for a Merry Christmas.
A Christmas Cantata titled When Santa Claus Listens In will be presented at the Christian Church Monday evening at eight. The Pend leton Gas Company announces its annual meeting to elect officers for the coming year. The event will be held on January 8.
A. F. Miles, longtime Solon C. Vial aide and nineteen years with the Indiana Reformatory staff, was chosen as superintendent succeeding the late George A. H. Shideler. Trustees and Governor McCray announced the selection after a late Monday conference. Pendleton residents had pressed for Miles’ appointment.
Mr. Miles is the new superintendent of the Indiana Reformatory at Pendleton. He began service in 1904 as an officer in the shops and is described as six feet tall with broad shoulders and an athlete’s physique. He is mild mannered yet firm in his handling of inmates.
Pendleton community welcomed Captain Miles as the new superintendent after Supt Shideler's death. Solon C. Vial of Indianapolis becomes first assistant, succeeding Miles. Trustees praised Miles as a leader and pledged to continue Shideler's plans while discussing other board members and telephonic talks with Governor McCray.
The 20 year old son of Chas Miller of Alfont was struck and killed at 9 30 AM by the Hoosierland on Union Traction Co tracks near the Alfont bridge. Deaf and dumb, he was walking toward Ingalls facing the car and was mangled. The body was taken to Fortville. The Miller family moved to Alfont about a year ago from Marion. The father is a carpenter at the reformatory.
Dr W R Sparks of Pendleton was chosen as vice president for 1924 at the Madison County Medical Society annual meeting in Anderson Tuesday night. Officers named include President H W Gante of Anderson and Secretary-Treasurer M A Austin of Anderson. Dr L F Mobley of Summitville named to the board of censors. Dr Charles M Harless admitted as member. The fee rises to 8 annually. Fifteen physicians attended and discussed boosting activities for the year ahead. The society will host the Eighth district meeting in Anderson next May at the Stilwell Hotel.
Jimmy Martindale is expected to pop in from IU soon for the holidays. When you hear a big noise it’s Jimmy.
R. F. and Mrs. Thomas sold their East State Street property to Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Shirley for 4500 dollars. The Thomases plan remodeling of their Broadway property known as the Gene Lewis place and move there.
Funeral services for Carroll McCoy 17 son of Mr and Mrs Edward McCoy were conducted Sunday afternoon at Huntsville Church Rev D J Thornton officiating. Burial followed at Huntsville cemetery. The community attended in large numbers.
The Christian Church calls members to Christmas services including Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship with sermons on peace and Christ’s reign. A Christmas cantata titled Santa Listening In is planned for Monday evening. A Dec 30 all day program will elect officers and review the year's work with a church dinner at noon.
Our Sunday School meets at 9 30 Sunday December 23 with an offering for Japanese Relief. A Christmas entertainment follows on Sunday night featuring the Messiah part sung by the choir and selections by Prof. Dryer. Rev Powell preaches Sunday morning on Christmas As A Practice or a Principle. A cordial welcome to all.
