The American four masted schooner Shenandoah arrived in New York after a 124 day voyage from San Francisco marked by four severe storms. Seaman William Varney was killed by a fall from aloft, Mate Taylor sustained serious injuries from wreckage, and a cabin boy suffered broken leg and ribs.
Rome report that Generals Botha Dewet and Delarey asked for an audience with the pope and Emmanuel but were refused. In New York, the Mollineux trial opened this morning with the prisoner confident of acquittal.

The grand jury will probe if women seeking unlawful treatment died and were buried there.
The Walla Walla land office reports a threefold rise in cash business in the last quarter of 1902 over the same period in 1901, totaling 29201.54 dollars versus 8490.18. Most filings come from Franklin and Adams counties as land prices rise. Homesteads numbered 198 and final proofs 39 were recorded, underscoring a historic surge in activity.
Geologist Schrader from Tacoma with 17 assistants returns from Central Alaska where he mapped a vast unexplored region. In pursuance with the Detroit agreement a general resumption of work started today at window glass factories in the Indiana gas belt including Muncie Alexandria and Gas City after last summer’s idle period. Factories began full production and expect to operate for seven to seven and a half months without a break.
Baptists from across Michigan convene in Detroit for the annual state assembly with an introductory service tonight featuring Rev. B. E. Tuller and a response by HB. Loomis. The business session begins tomorrow morning. Nearby, the American Humane Association holds its 26th annual convention in Albany with notable participants including Elbridge T. Gerry and John G.
