Frank Strong, former president aspirant at Yale and once with the University of Oregon, inaugurated as head of the University of Kansas. Officials, alumni, and educators from Kansas and beyond attend a day marked by ceremonies, with weeklong events including reunions and athletic contests.

New York market reports from Oct 16 show grain traders optimistic as European crops suffer rain damage. Demand for good wheat for mixing remains strong, with prices up from recent lows though near highs of the day. Cables up 3.5 to 5-10 percent, Dec wheat in New York and Chicago near 7 3/4 to 7 1/2. Also notes cholera outbreak in Gaza with forty deaths reported in Jerusalem and Gaza.
Union attorney and Democratic leader T H Crawford told a Portland Journal representative he supports enlarging the Supreme Court itself but rejects adding commissioners. He argued constitutional duties bound the justices and commissioners could only review cases without issuing decisions, risking unnecessary costs.
San Francisco October 16. Dr A J Blake shot twice in his office by Dr B F Stoll. Both were dentists and had quarreled. Blake is mortally wounded and will die. Cause of the trouble unknown at this time.
The Greencastle convention drew delegates from Auburn LaGrange South Bend Kendallville Indianapolis Huntington Marion and other cities. Welcome addresses were given by Mayor James DePauw University President Gobin and Miss Minetta T Taylor. Mrs James M. Smith presided for visitors as committees reported and plans for officers concerts and literary events at DePauw were set for tomorrow. In Washington Monitor Wyoming trial anticipated today with speed expectations of eleven and a half knots.
Two boats collided in Chesapeake Bay causing five people to drown including Captain Evens, his wife Ortigte, Ortigtte, and two passengers. The accident occurred when a skiing boat upset, near Richmond Virginia, on October 16.
The bankers excursion train arrived at 3 20 afternoon, stayed twenty minutes at the depot, and purchased about 100 Indian robes and shawls from Pendleton Woolen Mills sent to the train by telegram. In Portland, the Oregon state board of barbers' examiners finished its session on Tuesday. Thirty barbers passed the exam and seven failed. next meeting set for December.

Irish members shouted gag law protests amid pandemonium, while Patrick McHugh of Lothrim received two months imprisonment for intimidation in Sliko.
A. G. Miller, wanted for stealing 16 head of cattle on Snake River, shot himself near Pomeroy after officers traced him to his son in law's home near the city. Miller had previously served time in the Washington penitentiary for cattle theft.
Mount Soufriere erupted violently with volcanic dust delaying business in Bridgetown. Reports say Mount Soufriere was active overnight and dust fell thickly. damage at Martinique remains unclear. No injuries reported in Kingstown Jamaica.

They include state printer elections, city charter adoption under general laws, shifting general election timing, allowing state facilities elsewhere, and repealing the anti Negro provision. State Treasurer W Maynard notes Washington’s debt cut by 11.49644 over two years. A gold discovery is reported during excavation for a federal building at Butte. A glass pan reveals many colors.
